We were lucky to catch up with Emma Dixon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Emma, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
The origin of my self-care journey started in 2018 when I met my therapist. Doing work with her has opened me to opportunities that continue to help me take care of and love myself and in return, help others grow. Therapy is like walking with a friend who is helping me clear the path.
Through therapy I found yoga, meditation, and gardening, pillars of self-care that help me remain present.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
For 12 years I have been practicing the art of hairdressing as a licensed cosmetologist, master barber and national educator. For the last year I have been growing in my journey as a yoga teacher. All of my offerings are held in a a safe gender-inclusive studio environment (Fuertes Hair Studio in Charlotte). What I find special about what I do, is that I get to hold energetic space for the people around me and help them let go of what they are attached to.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Mindfulness – The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle is a great place to start!
Boundaries – This is a work in progress for me but what has helped are simple shifts like remembering that people who don’t respect my boundaries are not intended for me and that people-pleasing isn’t sustainable / doesn’t contribute to my growth.
Being barefoot outside – This connection to the earth never fails to help me ground and be in my body.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is a person who is open-minded and accepting of all humans and folks who can invest in and appreciate the details of a well-made, intentionally-shaped haircut.
