We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Keys Harper a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Keys , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I inherited my work ethic from my mother. She was incredibly hardworking, always striving to provide for my sister and me, often taking on a second job to ensure we had everything we needed. She instilled in me the importance of working hard for everything I want, ensuring that no one can take anything I’ve worked hard for on my own away from me. This lesson, learned at a young age, has driven my resilience and determination in all that I do.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Hello readers, my name is Keys Harper, an Atlanta native and the owner of Spoiled Brats Brand. Our brand is dedicated to manifesting your dreams and desires because everyone deserves to be spoiled. I started this venture as a mental health outlet to express my experiences and adversity through creative designs. We offer a wide range of apparel, shoes, and accessories, and are excited to introduce our new golf collection, including golf tops, skirts, shorts and sun visors.
Our mission is to empower you to be bold and beautiful, with versatile clothing suitable for both comfort and a stylish night out. You can explore and purchase our collection online at spoiledbratsapparel.co, in Dallas, TX at Rmir Market, in Maryland at Ayo Boutique, and soon in Atlanta.
Additionally, I host a show called The Spoiled Brat Show, where we feature various entrepreneurs and business owners. We discuss their brands, share content, and address mental health challenges.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that have been particularly impactful in my journey are communication, appreciation, and networking. Throughout my experience, I’ve learned many things, but these three skills have been the most beneficial.
Communication is vital; effectively conveying information to clients or customers about your business fosters better understanding and rapport. This ties into appreciation, where acknowledging and rewarding customers—perhaps with a small token or gift if there’s been an inconvenience—builds a stronger relationship and shows them that you value their business.
Networking has been crucial as well. Meeting insightful and influential people can significantly enhance and elevate your business, providing opportunities you might not have accessed otherwise. Networking has opened new avenues for my business, connecting me with talented individuals who motivate me and provide valuable services, such as photographers and venue owners for hosting events. Overall, networking has been instrumental in taking my business to the next level.
These three skills—communication, appreciation, and networking—have been instrumental in my professional growth and success.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, which happens often due to juggling my apparel business, motherhood, a 9-to-5 job, and managing inventory across multiple stores, I take a step back to refocus and breathe. I find that prioritizing and breaking tasks into manageable parts helps alleviate the stress. I focus on one thing at a time, whether it’s one task a day or a week. Additionally, using a planner is crucial for me; it helps me schedule tasks and set deadlines, ensuring I stay organized and on track.
