Meet Matt Eskandari

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Matt Eskandari. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Matt below.

Hi Matt, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?

Developing my ability to take risks has been a journey of learning from experience, building confidence through calculated steps outside my comfort zone, and continuously seeking knowledge to make informed decisions. Surrounding myself with a supportive network of mentors and friends has provided valuable perspectives and encouragement, while embracing a growth mindset has shifted my approach to challenges, viewing them as opportunities for personal and professional growth. Through these efforts, I’ve grown more comfortable with uncertainty and have honed my judgment in assessing risks, allowing me to pursue opportunities with greater clarity and determination.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’ve always had a passion for storytelling, particularly in the realm of suspense and action. My journey in filmmaking began with a deep-seated fascination for creating narratives that captivate and thrill audiences. What excites me most about my work is the ability to transport viewers into intense and gripping situations, where they experience a rollercoaster of emotions.

Professionally, I’m focused on crafting movies that not only entertain but also resonate with audiences on a visceral level. Each project I undertake allows me to delve into new challenges, explore different themes, and push the boundaries of storytelling. Whether it’s navigating high-stakes scenarios in ‘Survive the Night’ or exploring the human psyche in ’12 Feet Deep,’

Beyond the thrill of filmmaking, I’m committed to continuously evolving as a storyteller and filmmaker. I believe in the power of cinema to provoke thought, evoke emotions, and spark conversations. We live in an interesting time with AI tools entering our industry. While AI can automate certain aspects of filmmaking, the human touch in storytelling and direction remains essential. As for what’s next, I’m excited about upcoming projects that will further push creative boundaries and continue to engage viewers in unexpected ways. I’m grateful for the opportunity to share my passion and vision through my films, and I look forward to whatever the future holds for me.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Reflecting on my journey, three qualities that have been pivotal are perseverance, creativity, and collaboration. Perseverance kept me going through challenges and setbacks, essential in an industry where persistence is so often rewarded. Creativity allowed me to innovate and tell stories in unique ways, distinguishing my work in a very competitive field. Collaboration with talented individuals has been crucial, as filmmaking is a team effort requiring diverse skills and perspectives.

For those starting their journey, I recommend embracing perseverance by staying resilient in the face of obstacles. Cultivating creativity involves exploring new ideas and techniques, constantly challenging oneself to think outside the box. And fostering collaboration means valuing teamwork and learning from others in the industry. Developing these qualities takes time and dedication, but they are invaluable in building a successful career in filmmaking.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

Throughout my career, several individuals have played pivotal roles in helping me overcome challenges and develop essential skills as a filmmaker. Firstly, my mentors in the industry have been invaluable, providing guidance, sharing their experiences, and offering constructive feedback that has helped refine my craft. Secondly, my collaborators—cinematographers, editors, and production designers—have been instrumental in bringing my creative vision to life. Their expertise and dedication have enriched my projects and pushed me to elevate my work. Lastly, I must acknowledge the support of my family and friends, whose unwavering encouragement and belief in my abilities have been a constant source of strength. Together, these individuals have created a supportive network that has enabled me to navigate obstacles, grow as a filmmaker, and ultimately achieve success in this competitive industry.
