Meet Keon Hill

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Keon Hill a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Keon, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

This is a great question, and to be honest, it wasn’t until recently that I believe I overcame imposter syndrome. A few weeks ago, I had the honor of being the keynote speaker at my high school’s graduation ceremony. When I first received the call inviting me to give the speech, I was extremely excited. However, I was also pretty nervous. Thoughts instantly crept into my mind, such as, “Am I even ready for this?” “They could have chosen anyone else, so why me?” “Will they even receive what I have to say?”

I went to my prayer closet, and God showed me that throughout the Bible, there were people He called who responded not with confidence but with fear. His response gave me the confidence and freedom from imposter syndrome, so I hope if you are reading this and struggling with it, I can share with you what God told me.

“Go with the strength that you have.” In other words, you have everything you need to do what God has called you to do. I want to encourage you to walk into every room as if God sent you. Please know that once you take the first step, God will meet you and give you everything you need to fulfill the assignment He has given you.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

My name is Keon Hill and I currently serve as the Principal of New Chapel Christian Academy in Camp Springs, Maryland. I also create content on social media with the hopes of helping people discover God through authenticity, inspiration, and vulnerability. As a speaker, leader, and content creator, I remain devoted to inspiring individuals to live their best lives while emphasizing the importance of keeping God at the forefront of all endeavors.

I have had the privilege of speaking at various venues, including school assemblies, panels, conferences, and workshops. Additionally, my wife and I co-host a podcast titled “The Journey 2 The Hills,” which serves as a testament to our faith. Through this platform, we generously share insights from our marriage with love, humor, and vulnerability. All in all, my commitment is to advance the kingdom of God through my service, utilizing any platform or opportunity that He graciously provides.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

If I had to choose three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey, they would be wisdom, humility, and communication.

Wisdom:

There are multiple ways to increase wisdom. First, I would encourage you to seek counsel from people who have been successful in the area you are seeking knowledge. Second, be intentional about utilizing resources available to us, such as books, podcasts, conferences, etc. Lastly, in my experience, consistent prayer to God asking for wisdom has led to an increase in it.

Humility:

I grew in humility when I recognized that I can’t navigate life alone. When I tried to do everything by myself and relied solely on my own skills, I realized I was operating out of pride. Inviting God into my life and acknowledging my need for help led to a significant shift.

Communication:

Communication has many layers, but the most important lesson I learned is to be quick to listen and slow to speak. I became intentional about listening to understand, rather than just to respond.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

When I was 16, I was playing on an AAU basketball team and we were preparing to travel to Las Vegas for a big tournament. I was super excited, but my parents had different plans. They signed me up to attend the National Youth Leadership Conference at the same time as the Las Vegas trip!

As you can imagine, I was extremely mad at my parents. However, years later, I am so grateful for their decision and how they always prioritized both academics and athletics. They ensured I was a student first before an athlete, and I believe that mindset has paid true dividends in my life today.
