Meet Brian (BP) Pilling

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brian (BP) Pilling. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brian (BP) below.

Hi Brian (BP) , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

From loosing all the time, not knowing the true meaning of winning. Everyone has a rock bottom moment in life. Mine came growing up poor in homestead fl south of Miami. Never knew what money meant till you have noting and become something and loose it all again. The rock bottom like I mentioned, opportunities hardly came around to be amongst the fortunate ones that had little to no worries. With a family of 5 on my own I had to make sacrifices to beat the odds. RedLight Studio ATL was my plan to win my war against failure over and over, now I’m even and beating the odds,” I became resilient”

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

My dream as a film director and photographer, has always been to win some type of award for best film of the year and best Director award. Every aspect of winning is a part of failing if the achievement is not met. I create movies based on what I see value in! Why paint a picture if you can’t see what it is. When I paint my picture I want the audience to stare at my work for hours, I want my viewers to leave with something to think about. 2024 has been a year of writing and preparing for fall production! Summer of 25’ will be sizzling for what I have in storage. Ive recently collaborated with Getty Images and Shutterstock for some amazing work so stay tuned.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Reflecting on impactful qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge in my journey related to film, three stand out:

1. Storytelling -Mastering the art of storytelling is crucial. A compelling narrative drives engagement and emotional connection, whether through a screenplay, direction, or editing.

Advice, Study the fundamentals of storytelling by reading books on scriptwriting, analyzing great films, and practicing writing your own stories. Attend workshops and seek feedback from peers and mentors to refine your narrative skills.

2. Technical Proficiency-Understanding the technical aspects of filmmaking, including camera operation, lighting, sound design, and editing, is essential. These skills allow you to bring your creative vision to life effectively.

Advice,Enroll in film courses or online tutorials to learn the technical skills. Get hands-on experience by working on small projects, experimenting with different equipment, and familiarizing yourself with editing software. Volunteer or intern on film sets to gain practical experience.

3. Collaboration and Networking Film is a collaborative medium, requiring effective teamwork and networking. Building strong relationships with other filmmakers, actors, and crew members can open doors to new opportunities and enhance the quality of your projects.

Advice, Be an active participant in the film community. Attend film festivals, join local film groups, and collaborate on projects with others. Develop strong communication and interpersonal skills to work well with diverse teams.

For those early in their journey:

Create and Share-Start making films, no matter how small. Share your work on platforms like YouTube or Vimeo to get feedback and visibility.

Learn from the Best-Watch a wide range of films, including classics and contemporary works. Analyze what makes them effective and try to incorporate those elements into your own projects.

Persevere and Be Persistent- The film industry can be challenging, but persistence is key. Keep honing your craft, seek out opportunities, and don’t be discouraged by setbacks.

By focusing on these qualities and continuously improving upon them, you can significantly enhance your impact and success in the film industry.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
