Meet Massiel Alfonso

We recently connected with Massiel Alfonso and have shared our conversation below.

Massiel , so great to have you on the platform and excited to have you share your wisdom with our community today. Communication skills often play a powerful role in our ability to be effective and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your communication skills.

I developed my ability to communicate effectively through my early experiences with art and writing. From a young age, I found that art was my primary way of processing emotions. Writing on paper allowed me to express myself freely and courageously, providing a safe space to release my thoughts and feelings, regardless of who they were directed towards.

Over time, I began to explore and experiment with different forms of expression. I asked myself, “How can I say this more figuratively? What if I turned this sad, nostalgic feeling into a song? What if I made my study guide a rap song or turned my grocery list into a poem instead of writing love poems for Valentine’s Day that no one ever saw?” These experiments allowed me to tap into my creativity in unexpected ways. My diary became more than just a diary; it evolved into an alter ego, a brave voice that could say everything I felt without fear of judgment or hurting anyone’s feelings.

This exploration led me to realize that poetry was a language I spoke fluently. I discovered that through a few well-chosen metaphors, I could convey my deepest emotions and experiences in a way that resonated with others, even if they hadn’t experienced the same things. This realization hooked me on writing and transforming my life into poems.

Think of it like a photographer discovering the power of their camera. Once I started ‘capturing’ my world through words, I understood the profound impact of effective communication. This journey has shaped how I express myself and connect with others, making communication a deeply personal and powerful part of who I am. In essence, my communication skills blossomed through the exploration and transformation of my life into art.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am currently in a phase of my life where I am wholeheartedly following my dreams and passions. Ever since I was young, I’ve wondered who I would become. While I may not have a definitive answer yet, I do know that creating art and being surrounded by passionate artists and a supportive community makes me feel like I’m exactly where I belong.

Art has always been a driving force for me, something I would do for free repeatedly. The impact art can have on people is profound, and I believe in its power even though society often underestimates it as a “real job.” When I facilitate events and open art galleries, witnessing strangers connect deeply over art, share their emotions, and find healing is incredibly fulfilling. It brings me closer to discovering who I am meant to be.

I am a poet, author, and writer, striving to make a living through my art while achieving financial stability. The most exciting part of my journey is the continuous learning, evolving, and connecting with other artists. I am inspired by the immense talent I encounter and the collaborative spirit within the art community.

I am thrilled to share that I am curating my next big art exhibition and poetry event. My goal is to expand the art community, foster connections, and transform our collective feelings into something tangible and beautiful. Turning pain into art and using my voice to connect with audiences is my passion. This upcoming event is a step towards that, and I am excited to see where this journey takes me.

Ultimately, what makes my work special is the unique approach I bring to it. By transforming hurt into beauty and creating spaces for emotional expression and healing, I am forging a path that hasn’t been walked before. My art is not just about me—it’s about building a community and making a positive impact through creativity. This transformation of hurt into beauty is what makes my work truly special. There’s nothing else quite like it, and I’m passionate about continuing this journey and sharing it with others.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I’ve learned so much on various levels. I’ve discovered more about myself and my capabilities, gaining a stronger belief in myself and realizing that following my heart is something to be proud of. Professionally, I’ve learned the importance of embracing vulnerability, staying adaptable, and focusing on building a strong community. My community is who I do it for; they’ve given me the strength and motivation to continue creating. They have made space for me to share every emotion and real-life situation with no judgment, just support. Creating art is my way of giving back to them and inspiring others to do the same.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I’m always looking to collaborate because that’s how great ideas become amazing ones. The beauty of art lies in its unlimited possibilities, and I believe collaboration multiplies those possibilities. I’m searching for all forms of artists—poets, storytellers, painters, singers, dancers, and art curators. I never want to limit my possibilities; I aim to be different and change people’s perspectives while demonstrating the power of writing in many ways.
