Meet Tina Parol

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tina Parol. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Tina , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

I got my resilience from my challenges. My challenges taught me that I needed to rise above my circumstances in order to achieve the life I wanted. I could have fallen into victimhood, but I chose to prevail. My life has come with many, many challenges. I grew up a first-generation American in a low socioeconomic status. I suffered emotional abuse as a child. I was diagnosed with scoliosis at age 8 and wore a back brace from ages 8 to 16. I was relentlessly made fun of for my back brace. I have had chronic pain since I was 8. I succeeded in the music business, but as a woman in a volatile industry, I was met with very difficult situations in music, due to being in the industry during the “pre-Me Too” era. At age 33, I underwent a 10 hour, 14-level spinal fusion to correct my scoliosis and had 28 screws and 3 metal rods inserted into my spine. My lungs collapsed after and I nearly died. I had to relearn how to walk, how to breathe, and how to sing. Where did I get my resilience from? My challenges. My challenges formed me. They made me who I am and how I am. My challenges gifted me with my resilience, because I chose to allow them to.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Since the age of 19, I have been a professional musician. I signed a record deal with Universal Motown at age 19 and released a top 40 Billboard pop hit called “Who’s Got Your Money?”. I have written songs for Britney Spears, Celine Dion, Tenille Townes, Sabrina Carpenter, and Lady A (including their #1 Country Billboard hit “Champagne Night”). In 2020, I started my own company called G23 Entertainment where I write and perform my own artist songs for films, television shows, promo campaigns, and ads. My songs have been place in television shows such as Riverdale, Shameless, Legacies, Selling Sunset and more. You can hear my songs in promos for shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Wheel of Fortune. I also license my music to advertisements and have had my songs placed in ads for Target, Peloton, Maybelline and more. I absolutely love what I do. It was not easy to get to this point, and my music reflects the honesty of life’s struggles while also capturing life’s fun moments. I write songs for every emotion in the book. Aside from work, I am on the Board of Director for Music Health Alliance and advocate online for scoliosis awareness, as I have suffered with scoliosis since I was a child. After my scoliosis surgery in 2022, I released an album called “Fighter” and donated a percentage of whatever placements the songs from that album got to World Spine Outreach, which is a non-profit that facilitates and performs scoliosis surgeries in countries where there are no or limited healthcare resources. My brand is about honesty: through the good, the bad, the hard, and the victory.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

My most important skills or qualities are my ability to sense what people need (empathy), kindness, and persistence. My advice for people early in their journey is to be intentional. Learn how to work smart. Busy work will never serve you as much as intentional work will. Commit to yourself above all else. And taking care of your mental and physical health is a superpower that will help you accomplish just about anything.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed, I say no. I cancel things off my calendar. I take time to just….be. This sounds so simple, but it’s actually really hard to do. Especially as an entrepreneur, you want to say yes to most things. But I have learned that when I am overwhelmed, I am no good to anyone or anything, my business and creative work included. I am the type of person that needs a lot of time alone, or “alone together” with my husband, just chilling out. My mind and body need that rest. My advice is to prioritize rest and integrate it into your life, or your body will force you to.
