Meet Vee Adams

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Vee Adams. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Vee below.

Vee, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?

Taking action.

One day I was sitting on my bed anxious and overwhelmed. I hit a point in my life where I was tired of allowing my creative ideas and goals to become stagnant. Sure I had the visions but how can I actually see it through?

A few minutes later I told myself to get up and do it! It was wild because self doubt immediately started giving me reasons why it wouldn’t work. And that’s when I became highly aware of my inner conversations. How I would avoid the work before I even got started. And how lazy I was when it came to seeing ‘mundane’ tasks through. It was really an eye opener!

So I got up and started working with my hands, practicing, doing whatever physical action was needed to bring it to life. I had done so much of the mental and emotional work that some of the physical work I was doing was easier than I thought it would be! In that moment I showed myself that even taking 10 minutes a day for your dreams can make a difference. Small numbers add up!

Also, the Gym taught me a lot of self discipline. It showed me how much of your decisions can be centered around your mental and emotional state. I continue to show up for myself which gives me so much confidence in my daily tasks, communication and decision making skills. It’s something about showing yourself that you love and respect your mind, spirit and body.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Dance and music is where my Creative Journey really began. No matter at what creative era people meet me at in life I always say “Dance is my first Love.”

Dance quickly led to me exploring drawing, reading, singing, poetry, etc… I guess since a kid I’ve always been in love with trying new things! Getting out of my comfort zone.

This leads me to my current creative state in life: Being an Artist. Multidisciplinary.

I create visual digital art, draw, write poetry, teach about natural hair & beauty and dance. I’ve reached a space in life where I’m using more intuitive energy on how and when I create. I enjoy being more intentional in my journey. This has led me to be on stages with amazing Artists, reach black women around the world to teach about our beautiful hair, connect and collaborate with other creatives! I’m always grateful to continue choosing to show up and create no matter what I’m going through in life.

Lately, I have been creating visual art centered around Afro-Futurism, Ancestral Roots and Collage & Surrealism. I think Art is so reflective of the state of the Artist. I want to share and hopefully help heal, revitalize and inspire the collective.

I’ve also been creating hair tutorials for my curly hair family and sharing my gym Journey on my YouTube channel: CosmicQveen. It’s a space I’ve had for years to share and connect with others!

I’m also collaborating more with Creatives in my city. From workshops, to photoshoots, to community projects. I’m excited for what’s to come!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Three qualities that have impacted me the most are: patience, discipline and grace.

Having discipline has changed my life tremendously! There was something about showing up to the gym when you’re happy and when you’re just not in the mood. To show yourself you can see things through. To have goals and simultaneously also a long term mindset.

The patience to enjoy your life’s journey. Not just when you reach a milestone or when you get to the “perfect” life. But the joy and satisfaction can be right now! Right here. And if you’re unhappy you can change your life through continuous conscious awareness and habits. It takes time. Patience. It took a lot of acceptance, awareness and accountability to get to where I am now. And I often feel like I’m just getting started. In the thick of it, it was incredibly frustrating or even heart breaking. But looking back I really do understand why I had to learn the way I did.

Giving myself and others more grace along with boundaries hasn’t been easy but worth it. Compassion and balance is needed along the way. These are qualities that at points in my life I still struggle with. But that’s the fun part of being a student of life. Change is inevitable. The best thing I can do is remain grounded, clearheaded and adaptable. And always keep my spark!

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed I look to nature, reading, music, moving my body, meditation and prayer. These are just a few activities that come to mind and have been helpful for relief.

I find that journaling and quiet time are just as important. I tend be a busybody and have a very active imagination and mental chatter. Things that help relieve my mind and reset my nervous system is something I have to be aware of. Once I set my mind on something I become laser focused with getting it done. To the point where I have difficulty resting. So regularly exercising and doing other activities I mentioned are pretty much vital to my overall health.

Finding what works for you can be an amazing way to sustain the goals you want to achieve in life.
