We were lucky to catch up with Drs. Phillip & Janice Porter recently and have shared our conversation below.
Drs. Phillip & Janice, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
We developed my confidence and self-esteem through many small accomplishments & successes combined with overcoming obstacles over the years in my education, professional career and personal life. It began by setting and surpassing by education goals. We built on that by setting by professional goals in both the corporate, public education and nonprofit sectors and surpassing by goals in several senior leadership roles. This was all accomplished as the same time of achieving many personal goals for myself and my family. Was it easy no! We had many personal and business obstacles to overcome which never ends which is normal.
Plus, we always intentionally had a good family, friends and professional network and mentors who were instrumental in our success.
Developing confidence and self-esteem is not an overnight process but a lifetime destination. As your confidence and self-esteem grows so will your success and income.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Our company is on a mission to erase the toxic family business myth of “don’t hire your family in your business because they will be a major obstacle to building wealth”.
The Vision of Global Family Success Insitute is to be a leading global educational institution that educates, trains, and coaches family businesses, students, and community leaders in practical principles to balance family traditions, social relationships, professional expertise, business, and ownership needs in a safe learning environment that’s cultivates the family’s dream of building wealth together.
What makes our company special is that our company Global Family Success Institute is a division of Generations Empowerment Enterprises, LLC which is a privately held African American family-owned business. We have over 30 family members from 3 generations who have shares in our family business. Through our many years of business experience, mentors, coaches, etc. we have developed a model that successfully teaches family members how to learn and work together to build generational wealth. There is not much we have not experience as a family business; from board members getting divorced, board members passing, learning how to agree to disagree, issuing effective family business agendas and minutes, major projects failing, and more. In addition, we have a productive extended family network that we are able to combine with our professional and business network. Through it all, together in faith our family business continues to move forward.
What makes our company unique is that we have the following:
* The 5-Step Building a Family Championship Team Program: Our 5-step program consists of the following steps:
1. Education: Through our online education platform, we invite family members from at least two generations to take our courses together. 2. Establish Effective Family Business Meetings: You will learn how to run an effective family business meeting. Most family businesses fail because they do not master this step.
3. Establish Reward Systems: You will learn how to create and launch a family reward system that rewards the family to be successful. If major companies have employee rewards programs, your family business must have one as well to be successful. When your family implements a reward program, you will be among the top 1%.
4. Ownership Strategies: The key to building wealth is through ownership. You will learn several types of ownership and implement at least one wealth building ownership strategy.
5. Vision Driven Family Handbook: You and your family will learn how to create a customize family & business handbook. After you create your Vision Driven Family Handbook, you will give a copy to your family members and employees. It contains employment and job-related information. It is a vital communication tool between your company and its family members and employees. It can be used to explain a company’s systems and processes, and to provide guidance on workplace. In addition, it will include your family vision and mission statements and how it is linked to your business vision and mission statement. This step is crucial to your long-term generational success.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three most important qualities that most impact our journey was:
1. Our village/network: Our family as collective unit has a very strong supportive personal, spiritual, professional, business and social network.
2. Trust: Your family must learn how to trust each other 100% of the time. Building trust is not automatic just because you are family. We had to learn what systems we needed to put in place and maintain that build trust across generations on an ongoing basis.
3. Leadership/Elders: Our family leadership has mastered the “Soft Skills” need to run a successful family business
The advice that we would give on ways to best developed or improved these skills
– Identity good mentors and coaches who have achieve what you and your family want to achieve.
– You must believe in on-going self-improvement and family improvement. You must take time several times a year for self-improvement and family learning and working improvement.
– Faith: You much have faith in God, yourself, family members, coaches, mentors, etc.
