We recently connected with Jocelyn Nicole and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jocelyn, really appreciate you joining us to talk about a really relevant, albeit unfortunate topic – layoffs and getting fired. Can you talk to us about your experience and how you overcame being let go?
Getting laid off in April, 2022 was one of the best things to have ever happened to me. I was living a comfortable life, with a comfortable salary, softly approaching my dreams but not going in full force.
Once I got laid off I lost almost everything I had, and decided now was the time – I had nothing to lose. So I went in full force to my dreams, once and for all.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a singer, model, and actress. I have a true love for live performing, and love to bring a powerhouse ballad to any performance. I have been blessed to have the opportunity to walk in Fashion Week, and am currently getting ready to go to an international conference in New York to showcase my talents with the hopes of getting picked up by an international agent, so I can take my love and passion for performing to the next level.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Tenacity, Self-Confidence, and knowing who I am and what I bring to the stage. Spend some time with you and really decide who you are as a performer and an artist, and stick to what your majors are. Don’t compromise on what is important to you, even when it feels like it will cost you to stay true to who you are.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
I am blessed to have been raised by a very strong and independent single mother. I was a very tenacious and eccentric child (and still am), and she let me express myself however I wanted to – even if that meant wearing a tutu as a hat in public. She majored on the majors and set very high standards for me, and didn’t let me get by with anything. At the time, especially as a teenager, I was very envious of my friends – they were allowed to do things that I simply was not allowed to do.
Looking back, I am so grateful. I have grown to be very strong myself, and live by a high standard that I may not have set for myself if my mother had not set the bar so high.
At the time it felt like it cost me a lot, not to be able to roll with my friends while they were doing things that I was not allowed to do. Now I see that I gained everything from missing out on a life that wasn’t every meant for me.
