Meet Phillip Dorsey

We recently connected with Phillip Dorsey and have shared our conversation below.

Phillip, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

Growing up I wasn’t always as confident and self assured that I am today. I remember being a little kid and in class who knew the answers and the pronunciation of words the correct way and being bullied and made fun of for that, and that hurt me because I thought that was a cool thing to know your school work and how to pronounce words the correct way so instead I chose to think smaller to the level that my “friends” were in order to be accepted. As I grew older I realized how reducing my thinking had effected the confidence within myself regarding opportunities afforded to me in my life, so there was a point when I took to personal development and decided to work on myself and regain the confidence within myself again to be fearless in my thinking and innovative and optimistic. So now, for years I walk, talk, interact and educate in a manner that is in confidence, integrity, and purpose.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am a native raised Houstonian, but born in Hahn Germany. I am a graduate of the University of Houston- Downtown with a Bachelor in Interdisciplinary Studies and a Masters in Leadership Education from Nova Southeastern University in Davie Florida. Currently I am a 17 year City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department employee functioning in various roles with having the opportunity of being the department Chief of Staff. While with the City of Houston I have been able to obtain other certifications such as the Certification Accreditation Program for Supervisors, Defensive Driver Instructor Certification, Professional Administrative Certification Excellence and Certification of Public Manager.

I am also a father of three daughters Jocelyn (21) who is approaching her Senior year at Prairie View University where she is pursuing her degree in Music. And Kristina (19) who is approaching her Sophomore year at Jarvis Christian College where she is pursuing her degree in Education. And lastly, Alyssa (17) who is a Senior at G.W. Carver High School where she is thriving in musical theatre with the focus of attending Juilliard. Being a father is the biggest highlight of my life and one that I enjoy everyday due to the relationship that me and my “cubs” as I refer to them as have developed.

In the entrepreneurial realm I am the CEO of Geared Towards Greatness Life Coaching which is a life coaching brand focusing on assisting individuals reach the greatness that they seek in particular areas in their life such as with Personal/ Professional relationships, Marriage/ Divorce, Parenting, Personal Development, and Life Skills. I am also the CEO and co-host of the Sticks and Chucks Podcast where myself and guest speak on various thought provoking topics ranging from politics to the latest trending gossip. And when I am not assisting individuals reach their greatness in life or discussing with other likeminded individuals about trending topics I am the CEO of Dorsey’s Pantry which is a personalized meal preparation company. The thought of Dorsey’s Pantry came from my love of cooking and how therapeutic and decompressing it is for me so I thought that with all the rave reviews that I would receive when individuals tasted my various food dishes why not share it with the world and create meal preparations that were customized to individuals health and dietary requirements.

As an ambitious, innovative, and forward thinking individual I live by a simple life motto which is “ Aspire to Inspire before I Expire”.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Qualities and skills that I believe have had an impact on my current journey have been that of effectively communicating and actively listening. While this may sound so simply it is something that has to be developed and constantly worked on when coming in contact with various individuals in life. Also, I found that the usage of positive affirmations have assisted in the pivot of the mindset. I remember using sticky notes with various positive affirmations on them such as “Be Great Today”, “ You are Amazing”, “Be Fearless”, “I love me some me”. I found that when I poured positive affirmations into myself the out pouring was individuals gravitating to me to receive the positive energy.
My suggestion I to those who are seeking on how to develop or work on these skills which there are many more, I would suggest to first self assess yourself and be completely honest with yourself meaning acknowledge your “Plus” which is working for you in a positive and beneficial manner and your “ Delta” which is what you can work on and become better at. The key to successfully accomplishing this is be honest and transparent with yourself and to hold yourself accountable and accept the challenge.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

Currently I am looking to collaborate with fellow likeminded individuals who are in life coaching to gain insight on different methodologies and theories when it comes to personal development. Also, I am looking to collaborate with fellow podcasters who are interested having thought provoking and insightful conversations on multiple subject matters.
