We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sierra M. Clark a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sierra M. , so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I wrote a book Finding Sierra in the process of this I realized that I even had imposter syndrome. In the book the chapter is titled Identity crisis I haven’t at that point heard of imposter syndrome.
Finding Sierra a journey to a better me the only way out is in.
Was about finding who I was… Listening to my internal self and discovering my art of self communication.
I didn’t find out who my biological mother was, until I was 9 years old. Although I knew her but as just the crack head in the family. That was what others referred to her has, Duke the crack head and my father never bothered.
This alarming a news coming from my grandmother breaking up my two parent home where I had a sister and a brother who turned out to be my first cousins because the lady that was raising me was actually my mom’s younger sister.
I also went through all my school years and most of my young adult life with an undiagnosed learning disability (dyslexia) either my households was to dysfunctional or the school systems was to cookie cutter. I can point many reasons I feel this unique ability of mine went unnoticed.
I struggled to be apart at home and in school, which added to the later symptoms identified as imposter syndrome not being confident in who I was, feeling inadequate because I didn’t (readd and comprehend like everyone else) fit in. Bring teased by other children at school, at home was no different my little cousins I knew once as my brother and sister did not hesitate in making fun of me because my mom was not the traditional mom with the 9:00 to 5:00.
I always felt indifferent especially within my family I thought something was wrong with
me for a very long time. I overcompensated becoming a people
pleaser, running away from moments to
express my true feelings, just to make sure
that people like me or included me. I had abandonment issues feeling
that the two people who are supposed to love me choose not to did not help with
myself belonging.
I started noticing that people opinion of me was different than mine. People praised me people wanted me around people trust my opinion, my friends and random people in the grocery store would always ask me for my advice. Even as a young girl strangers had no problem coming up to me and talking to me is if they knew I would be a present help in the time of their trouble. Like a lighthouse to boats lost at sea.
I noticed that my view about myself wasn’t how others viewed me. Words do matter especially the ones you say to yourself. No longer seeing through the leans of other, not through my fears, or my human conditions like imposter syndrome. I allowed my knowledge of self to finally saturate my love of self that bloomed into a respect of self and I decided to no longer be old version of myself. Which changed my narrative going from victim to victor In my own Story I found Sierra.
How did I overcome Imposter syndrome….. by removing the M.U.S (made up stuff) I believed and thought about myself.
I had to Disrupt – my old mindset Tame- my limited beliefs Transform- my self communication.
I finally allowed myself to show up for myself in ways that I showed up for others, I started celebrating myself in a ways that I celebrate others, I took time out to finally love me for everything that I am and all that I’m not.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
