We were lucky to catch up with Kenda Bell (Spruill) recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kenda, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Both are two things, in my opinion, we are always developing because life always gives us sacred opportunities to gain greater wisdom about the world we live in. With this wisdom we will hopefully gain greater confidence & rise our self-esteem by learning & growing.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m Kenda Bell, affectionately known as the Joy Factor Mama. My life has been a journey of resilience and transformation, a testament to the indomitable spirit within every woman. From overcoming breast cancer and triumphing over stuttering to navigating the challenges of single motherhood and finding marital bliss in my 40s, my story is one of perseverance and self-discovery.
As a spiritual nutritionist, I use my life lessons and intuitive gifts to guide others on their own journeys of self-discovery and forgiveness. Through my unique Joy Factor Method™, I empower clients to tap into their inner wisdom and transform their lives.
My expertise includes Feminine Power, Bagua™ Astrology, and the GROW™ & SMART™ methods, all woven into my Joy Factor Method™. In “The Sacred Joy Garden,” my virtual space, I share wisdom with vibrant, open-minded women ready to write new life chapters on their terms and tap into their sacred magic through joy.
As an Essence Bestselling author, I am thrilled to share my latest work, “Saturday Magic: A Hoodoo Story,” under Running Kids Press & The Hachette Group, alongside my co-author Nyasha Williams.
My spiritual growth went to new heights when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017, All the years of the stresses of being a single Black mother of a Black son who stuttered YET still kept going & going, financial ups/downs, heartbreak had accumulated in left breast in the form of a tumor. Delving into healing my inner dis-eases alongside this physical dis-ease was profound. Rituals & ancestral veneration work open so many energetic doors within that my outside world began to heal and change,
This experience has birthed “The Sacred Joy Garden, ” a virtual space for eclectic mature women who are really to heal through self-exploration, indigenous spiritual practices & JOY! My journal “Ethical Selfishness : 12 Pathways Back To Joy is the template I used to heal myself; Saturday Magic: A Hoodoo Story is a homage to the Ancestors who have walked with me during my various trials & successes. I want Black children to know early how this is essential to our culture , for all children to understand their budding magic and adults to remember.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1) Audacity – Audacity is the b-12 of genius , understanding boldness comes with being keenly aligned with your gifts from your heart & spirit
2) Reflection – Reflect on all things with gratitude. Everything serves to further. The good & not so good, are all sacred opportunities for growth.
3) Spirituality – No matter what you define as “spirituality” for you, it should be a part of your daily life. Whether it is prayer, meditation, communing with nature …whatever gives you peace to ground yourself or give you wings to soar…it’s necessary like breathing.

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I am always open to learning and growing. I listen to elders and those younger than me. If you are a creator & organization is not your thing, get a coach to help you organize your workflow. Never be so “good” at anything that you never practice, take classes to improve your skills, and work with others to increase your knowledge and grow your community, Everything is about community whether in the real-world or virtual.
