We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mycala Baker a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mycala, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Throughout my childhood and young adult years, I have had seasons of low confidence and lacking self-esteem in various areas of my life. A big part of this was my fear of being seen and my fear of outshining others. One thing that I was always confident in is my artistry. It was the one thing that I knew no one could take away from me. When I got on stage and performed, it was as if nothing else, or no one else mattered, but the art. As I have gotten older and grown in my spiritual beliefs, I believe that we manifest the life we desire based on our thoughts, actions, and how we truly feel about those manifestations. Once I grasped a hold onto this idea, it made me realize how powerful I am and how powerful we all are. Knowing that I have this power within me, there is no reason to lack confidence or have low self-esteem. There is a reason my soul is here in this exact time which let’s me know that my work here is not yet done and that my light still needs to shine. I’ve realized that me being confident and having a high self-esteem not only allows me to be free, but gives others permission to shine their light just as bright and to be free as well.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I was born and raised in Louisville, KY and began my journey as an artist at the age of 5. My dream as a little girl was to be a singer or a dancer. I was so shy so I decided to make dance my main art to study. Dance and music has always been something that I have not been able to let go. Even when I’ve tried to pursue other things, my heart always brings me back to the music. To the dance and song that’s inside of me. I am a singer, songwriter and dancer with a passion for helping people find the creator within themselves. I am most excited about being in a space to create and release my creations to the world. I have found that by tapping into the creator within me, it has allowed me to heal and release so many emotions that I did not realize I was holding on to. I want my artistry to not only entertain people, but to give them something they can feel on a deep and healing level.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey has been to start where you are now, never be afraid to ask for help, and to follow your intuition. In the beginning of my pursuit to take music more seriously, I did not know how I was going to execute all of my plans. However, I focused on the first thing that I knew to do, which was reach out to a producer friend. I didn’t know the process of making music, but I knew that HE did, and that he could help me. The beauty in life is that we have access to so many beautiful souls who each have their own purpose in life. A part of their purpose may be to assist you with yours, regardless of where you currently are. I tried to do so many things by myself in the beginning and I realized that most successful people have a team. It’s not necessary to use my energy wearing many hats when I can collaborate with other brilliant individuals to help me bring my visions to life. In regards to following your intuition, it can be hard if you don’t take time to tap into your body and pay attention to the signals it gives you. Over the years, I’ve been able to recognize when my intuition is speaking to me which has protected me from working with the wrong people or being in situations that are not for me. Although I had to go through some uncomfortable situations to learn what my intuition sounds like, those experiences have helped me become stronger and wiser to know that my intuition is a tool needed to guide me.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself by Joe Dispenza has helped me tremendously on my journey. I’ve read many books but this one in particular helped me realize that I can change my life at any moment by creating a new mind. Our life is an accumulation of our past beliefs, thoughts, actions, and feelings that we have had up until this moment. The beauty in this realization is that we can change our life by changing our mind and our perspective on life. This was impactful for me because it helped gain a deeper understanding of how to tap into the creator within me and BE the change I want to see in my life first in my mind.
