Meet Shaunna “Mamacita” Thomas

We were lucky to catch up with Shaunna “Mamacita” Thomas recently and have shared our conversation below.

Shaunna “Mamacita”, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

If I’m in the room it’s because I’ve already been effective/successful along the way to lead me there. My focus is always on why I’m present and to retain what I’m learning or to convey what I’m teaching. If the focus is on me because of my looks, that just increases my visibility and further piques the interest of my cohorts. I then gladly share my mission and passion for my community.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m an 18 year experienced Medical Laboratory Scientist that loves all things STEM. I’m able to incorporate research & organizational structure when coordinating corporate events through my company BASIC. BASIC is an acronym that stands for Brothers and Sisters in Collaboration. We work with an array of vendors to transform event settings and media outlets to promote public events that suit our client’s expectations. In the events industry, most information is private during the planning process as each client has a unique vision for their attendees. “Game day” as I call it is when I’m in my true element being present to ensure everything is moving smoothly as planned.

I delve into the analytics when influencing brands to expand reach and promote products from coffees to cosmetics. Being an influencer allows me to gain access to leaders of corporations and entrepreneurs that further open their doors to my nonprofit organization Basic Babies. Our youth group is welcomed to tour businesses and learn about the entrepreneurial journey to success.

I intertwine my skills, abilities, and resources to propel my businesses and others through collaborative efforts. Social media is the most effective tool for us and it serves as visible documentation.

The most rewarding aspect of what we accomplish with mentoring our youth is developing great relationships with them, their families, corporations, and partnering organizations within the community. That leads to referrals and volunteer opportunities. When our youth return week after week recruiting their friends, it lets me know that they’re enjoying the experience. I enjoy helping our youth transition to college. We have BASIC Babies and mentees that are in college. Those students always check in and send their availability to volunteer prior to coming home for the holidays, breaks, and Summer. They want to be involved with the younger youth members and share their strengths and challenges.

Over the past few months I’ve presented to students at Converse University in Spartanburg, SC and virtually in Nigeria for the Akanimo Cancer Foundation. I enjoy speaking and sharing knowledge that I’ve gained to empower others. I’ve also enrolled at Spelman College in Atlanta to gain a Cosmetic Science certification this Fall to further propel my research and influence for global brands!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Three areas that impacted my growth the most are effective communication, research, and sound financial management. It’s important to follow up in a timely manner even when the answer is sometimes “no.” It’s a level of respect to one’s time and future planning. Research and asking for referrals is a time saver. If information is lacking, you may be apart of someone else’s business initiative. Being well informed with tangible evidence will allow you to discern proper decisions for your next. When you exercise humanity, expect greater and the financial rewards will also become greater. Invest in yourself to continue to improve your processes.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

The Bible. Reading and writing Bible verses help me to maintain a level of peace and they affirm my faith and goodwill towards others. I write Bible verses in random places. When I come across them it serves as a reminder of my purpose and it centers my thoughts to remain connected to God.

Jeremiah 29:11 & Isaiah 58:11 motivates me to keep going because I’m able and strengthened with the guidance of God.

My spirituality is the foundation of my being and every step of my journey. Each collaborative partnership has been a testament of faith and God’s promises.

Be HER Champion by Marjy Marj is another book that helps me in the marketplace. This motivational guide and handbook encourages female empowerment and engagement. Celebrating and learning with women “who get it” cultivates true bonds and sisterhood. This manual holds you accountable with calls to action for personal growth and development. I strive to champion for others and desire the same support.
