Meet Khaleea Powell

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Khaleea Powell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Khaleea below.

Khaleea, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

When it comes to being the only one in the room who looks like me, I have learned several valuable lessons about effectiveness and success. First and foremost, I embrace my unique perspective as a strength. Being different often means bringing fresh ideas and innovative solutions to the table. I leverage my diverse background to offer insights that others might not consider, which has proven to be an asset in many situations.

Secondly, I have developed a strong sense of self-confidence. Knowing my worth and the value I bring to any discussion or project has been essential. This confidence allows me to speak up, assert my ideas, and ensure my voice is heard, even in spaces where I might be the only person of color.

Networking and building alliances have also been critical. Forming relationships with mentors, allies, and other professionals who support diversity and inclusion has provided me with a robust support system. These connections offer guidance, encouragement, and opportunities that have been invaluable to my success.

Lastly, I stay committed to continuous learning and growth. By remaining curious and open to new knowledge, I ensure that I am always prepared and informed, which enhances my credibility and effectiveness.

Being the only one in the room who looks like me is not without its challenges, but it has also been a source of strength and motivation. It drives me to excel, to break barriers, and to pave the way for others who will follow. My journey is a testament to the power of resilience, confidence, and community, and I am dedicated to continuing this work to inspire and uplift others.

Thank you, BoldJourney Magazine, for this opportunity to share my story and insights.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

My name is Khaleea Powell, a Nigerian American woman and dynamic serial entrepreneur. At 30 years old, I’ve been fortunate to make a significant impact in the media and client services industry. My work has touched the lives of many communities, including New Orleans, Mobile, Atlanta, and Birmingham, where I’ve dedicated myself to serving youth and young adults.

I am deeply passionate about writing, which has led me to become a published author and journalist. Sharing my insights and experiences with readers globally has been incredibly fulfilling. As a keynote speaker, I aim to inspire audiences with motivational talks, encouraging people to pursue their dreams and reach their full potential.

In addition to my entrepreneurial ventures, I am an advocate for awareness of The Black Maternal Epidemic. I believe in promoting wellness, advocating for healthy lifestyles, and encouraging self-care practices to help individuals lead happier, more fulfilling lives. My company, KhaleeaJhanei LLC, is dedicated to preserving, developing, and promoting the vitality of mental health awareness and resources while uplifting our community.

What excites me most about my work is the focus on community and collaboration. Collaboration amplifies our voices and our impact. By pooling our resources and talents, we can create lasting change. Whether through grassroots activism, political engagement, or community organizing, our combined efforts can dismantle barriers.

Reclaiming our power is also key , this means taking control of our narrative and destiny. It involves educating ourselves and others, advocating for policies that promote equality, and supporting businesses and initiatives within our community. When we invest in our people and resources, we foster economic independence and create opportunities for growth and development.

I am thrilled to announce the upcoming debut of a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing maternal needs related to postpartum care. This initiative aims to provide comprehensive support for new mothers, emphasizing mental health, wellness, and community resources.

Thank you for this opportunity to share my journey and mission. Together, we can continue to uplift and empower our communities, creating a brighter future for all.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Reflecting on my journey, I can identify three key qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge that have been most impactful: resilience, effective communication, and community-building.

1. Resilience:
Resilience has been crucial in navigating the many challenges I’ve faced as a serial entrepreneur and advocate. There were countless times when I was the only one in the room who looked like me, and resilience helped me push through adversity. For those early in their journey, I recommend embracing setbacks as learning opportunities. Building resilience involves maintaining a positive mindset, setting realistic goals, and celebrating small victories along the way.

2. Effective Communication:
Effective communication has been vital in my roles as an author, journalist, and keynote speaker. Being able to articulate my vision and connect with diverse audiences has opened many doors. To develop this skill, practice active listening and learn to convey your message clearly and confidently. Engaging in public speaking opportunities, writing regularly, and seeking feedback can significantly enhance your communication abilities.

3. Community-Building:
Building and nurturing communities has been at the heart of my work, particularly in the areas of youth empowerment and mental health advocacy. Strong communities foster support, collaboration, and growth. For those starting out, focus on forming genuine connections and building a network of like-minded individuals. Volunteer, join community groups, and participate in collaborative projects. Remember, collaboration amplifies impact, and a supportive network can provide invaluable resources and encouragement.

For those early in their journey, my advice is to remain open to learning and growth. Invest in personal development and seek mentors who can offer guidance and support. Stay true to your mission and values, and never underestimate the power of perseverance. By cultivating resilience, honing your communication skills, and actively building communities, you can pave the way for a successful and fulfilling journey.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
