We were lucky to catch up with Will Williams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Will, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
With imposter syndrome I had to slow down and reflect on everything that i’ve been through up until now. Often times I believe we overthink or convince ourselves that we don’t deserve to be doing things or in certain rooms but when it comes down to it we do. It’s you that’s persevered to hone your talents and achieve all that you have, it’s you that’s survived 100% of those days where you may not have thought you’d make it. And it’s you people see something in when they reach out to you with opportunities. So I just do my best to believe in myself, and if I can’t do that then I believe in the people who believe in me. Because there’s no way we’re both seeing something wrong.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hello everyone!
At the time of reading this I am wearing so many hats it’s a bit difficult to keep track of. By trade i’m a professional photographer who has experiences in multiple areas (portrait, product, real estate, lifestyle, etc…). I also handle full-time content creation for myself and for other brands, twitch livestreaming where i’m building a community of people who enjoy nostalgic video games, and developing my youtube channel to not only document my creative journey, but also to create content around areas in my life that i’m passionate about such as Fashion, pop culture, travel, and many other things!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three things that were most impactful in my journey were without question 1. A desire to show up and take space. If you’re getting into something and you are not only passionate about it then I believe that I owe it to myself to do it and pursue it to the best of my ability unashamedly and wholeheartedly, no matter who’s watching or talking, Too many times we deny ourselves the greatness that we know we’re capable of because we’re worried of how we’ll be perceived or what others might say. That’s something i’m glad I was able to work though very early on in my journey. 2. Resilience. I believe resilience is probably one of the most useful intrinsic skills/qualities a person can have if they’re pursuing anything creative and putting it out there to grow. There will be a lot of people who will have opinions on your work you won’t like, it may even come from people you admire, but, when things like that happen or things don’t quite go your way you have to have the mental fortitude to get back up and keep going. 3. If you’re early in your journey then my final piece of advice to remember to enjoy the journey. As we continue on with the process and we may not be seeing the results we’d like or aren’t achieveing the level of success we’re “supposed” to be at in our heads. Just remember why you started, remember to trust the process, do you best to slow down and enjoy where you’re at right now because some time ago you dreamed about being right where you are in this moment.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal/favorite client is one that is familiar with your work and trusts your creative vision completely. When I do find those clients I feel like it’s a testament to you as a creator because while they may not be familiar with your journey and what it’s taken for you to get to this point, their implicit trust in your work and creative process is essentially acknowledging that and the validation that can come from that is something truly heartwarming and motivates me even more.
