Meet Pam Morgan

We were lucky to catch up with Pam Morgan recently and have shared our conversation below.

Pam, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

The way I keep my creativity alive is by incorporating it into my daily routine. My motivation to do that is that I am a full time caregiver to my two adult disabled children, and brother, and it helps me to maintain an emotional balance and resilience in the face of caregiving challenges. During my day, when I get a break or two I will have my art close, and ready to work on. Even if it is only for 10 minutes. A lot of my artwork is nature inspired, so even if I step outside for a minute to get fresh air, it heals and inspires me.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I have been creative my whole life. It all started when I was 11 years old and took painting lessons from an art teacher in the basement of her home. It ignited my passion to create. My art journey continued throughout my schooling, where I always gravitated to creative activities, and in high school took a lot of art and music classes. Went to a college and studied art. Got into the business world and did many different jobs that involved graphic arts. Got married had 3 children who all had varying degrees of autism and health issues. My creative journey did not stop as I worked creative part-time jobs and different side hustles of selling my art. But, caregiving always took the primary spot in my life. I didn’t allow myself to have a social life or do too many things for myself because it took too much effort. When the pandemic came my adult children’s day programs came to a halt so they were home all of the time. It was at this point I decided to join an online art group who painted online together once a week. I worked hard building up my art and social skills since I was now a part of a community of like-minded individuals. After doing that for a couple of years I had the confidence to start an e-commerce site for my business, hired a creative business coach and kept working on myself in the meantime. From there I took classes and learned to make online classes, taught in-person classes and am now doing local art shows and events. What I have learned by doing this is that I was holding on to a lot of limiting beliefs that were keeping me from growing as a person and business.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

There were many years that I felt that I was just put on this earth to care for others, and what I wanted to do was secondary. I learned that by taking care of myself and following my passion of creating art is actually helping me to become better at coping with being a caregiver. It takes a lot of hard work to do both, but in the end I’m happier and feel like it’s elevated my purpose in life. The three words I would describe that are needed to be able to make big changes in your life are perseverance, resilience, and balance (emotional balance). I think the most important thing is that it is never too late to make positive changes in your life. I am 65 years old and just now taking the jump to start my own business!

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

Having a supportive husband has allowed me to make the big changes that I’ve made, especially being in a caregiving situation. I also finally reached out to other’s in the art community and got tremendous support from them as well. Taking classes and going to workshops and retreats continues to build my confidence. Hiring a business coach, and people to help me with technical support has enabled me to grow.
