We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Angie Taveras a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Angie, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Being resilient is not something I was always proud of until recently. It took a hard 30 days in April for me to understand that my resilience is what has led me to where I am today. I always viewed resilience as a negative thing, “why do I have to struggle?” whether that stemmed from loosing my parents at a young age, financial difficulties, and even romantic traumas, I simply did not want to be resilient anymore. I later on learned that my resilience blossomed thanks to those things that once broke me. At the age of 19 I found myself living alone in my Bronx apartment, balancing life while dealing with grief, at that moment I learned that I had to keep going. I had to get up and make my dreams happen otherwise no one else would do it. No matter how strong the pain was I had to get up and make life happen for me. Learning that things are happening for me and not to me has led me to embrace being a resilient young woman. One of my favorite quotes is one that I wake up to every morning by Dolly Parton — ‘We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails”

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Writing has always been my number one passion, I deeply craved to connect with my readers and inform them while using my life as an example. Thisbronxgirlwrites was birthed at The Bronx Collab and flourished throughout the years of me building with my team. I initially started writing as a form of liberating my thoughts, I had a difficult time expressing myself whilst as some point I believed I could be a rapper I quickly learned that writing is my forte. I have paintings that go alongside my experiences, which help release any stress associated with that moment.
A part of the reason I started “urban research based articles” is because I believe that the urban community is not receiving information and/or not understanding what was going on and how it would affect us the most. I share my articles to provide information, resources and support. Being able to connect with the community through pantry, the youth through our resource hub at the Bronx Collab further amplified my desire to encourage our children to read and my passion for writing.
One of the most exciting part of my blog is the feedback, the impact our stories have on others ideally teaching lessons through my writing. My earlier work speaks more on my personal life, statistic and how I personally defied those. My blog is for everyone but I really hope it reaches the hands of a young adult who needs a little motivation to keep on going because if I did, so can you. Overall there is not a big enough box to describe everything that I do, perhaps my parents were intentional when naming me as A.R.T is my initials.
I recently developed a podcast “Late Nite Collab” with my co-host in order to talk about taboo topics in my community.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Learn what works for you, its that simple. Do not compare yourself to others, its not a competition and failure is not defeat. A few qualities I know assisted in my journey for one kindness, make sure your heart is in the right place, when your intentions are pure everything else will follow. Even when others are distasteful remain true to you. Consistency, my articles take time to develop but in the meantime I’m doing the work that is needed to create my art. Be open-minded, life can always shift but that does not mean you’ve lost your path or passion perhaps new ideas will blossom from this new journey.
An advice to folks who are early in their journey is to give yourself grace. In order to improve these qualities you have to be patient with yourself and those around you. For me personally kindness stems from my empathy for others. People would often tell me ” you’re too empathetic” to me it is needed because you never know what someone is going through and what a connection might bring you if you also extend grace. Consistency comes natural when you love what you do. I’ve recently discovered that I never stop writing, painting and simply sharing my knowledge.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
One of the most impactful things my parents did was prepare me for there departure. While those who know me might think this is one of my morbid jokes, it is simply the truth. Everything my mother did up until the week of her passing impacted me to become the woman that I am today. My father taught me forgiveness, that impacts my every day life. The most impactful thing they did for me was to teach me that no matter what happens in the past the future will always be brighter.
