We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shakira Jackson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shakira, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Being the only one in the room who looks like me has taught me several valuable lessons about resilience, authenticity, and the importance of representation. As a 22-year-old Black woman in a politically male-dominated field, working in both policy and the mental health sector, I’ve had to navigate unique challenges and opportunities.
First and foremost, I’ve learned the power of confidence and self-belief. Graduating early twice with my bachelor’s and master’s degrees and now pursuing a law degree has shown me that my capabilities are not defined by others’ perceptions but by my own dedication and hard work. I remind myself of my accomplishments and let them fuel my drive to succeed.
Networking and building alliances have also been crucial. By seeking mentors and allies who support my vision, I’ve created a strong support system that helps me navigate and thrive in my field. Their guidance and encouragement have been invaluable in overcoming obstacles and achieving my goals.
Representation matters deeply to me, which is why I wrote a children’s book featuring Black characters. I want to show young children that they can see themselves in stories and aspire to achieve great things. Similarly, in the pageant world, where I am often one of only a few Black contestants, I use my platform to highlight diversity and inclusion. By showcasing my talents and sharing my unique perspective, I aim to inspire others and challenge stereotypes.
Remaining authentic to my values and identity is essential. Whether I’m advocating for mental health policies, competing in pageants, or running my business, I stay true to who I am. This authenticity not only strengthens my personal resolve but also sets a powerful example for others.
Ultimately, being the only one in the room who looks like me has reinforced my commitment to excellence, representation, and breaking barriers. I strive to pave the way for future generations, ensuring that diversity and inclusion become integral parts of every space I enter.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m Shakira Unique Jackson, and my journey is rooted in a passion for advocacy, education, and representation. Professionally, I wear many hats: I am a board member and Director of Advocacy and Engagement at Mental Health on Purpose, where I engage with legislators and organize events to support crucial mental health initiatives. My role allows me to blend my interests in mental health advocacy with my dedication to philanthropy, making a tangible impact on communities.
One of the most exciting aspects of my career has been my involvement with the United Nations as a Christian Council International Fellow and a contributor to the Commission on the Status of Women. This experience has allowed me to influence global policies and programs that address women’s rights and gender equality, contributing to meaningful international discussions and initiatives.
As a contributor to Young Voices and a Lead, Writing, and GO! Fellow graduate with America’s Future, I have had the opportunity to write op-eds, deliver testimonies, and conduct research on pressing issues such as clean energy and foreign election interference. My work with these organizations has sharpened my skills in policy analysis and advocacy, enabling me to contribute effectively to public discourse and policy development.
I am also deeply committed to political organizing, having worked on state senate campaigns and led advocacy efforts for independent candidates. My experience in these roles has honed my leadership and organizational skills, preparing me for future endeavors in the political arena.
In addition to my professional work, I am passionate about education and youth engagement. I have trained over 20,000 activists and leaders worldwide, equipping them with the skills to navigate digital and political technology effectively.
As a titleholder with the Miss America Opportunity, I address civic issues and work directly with students and community members to find solutions to educational inequities. Competing for Miss Pennsylvania has been an incredible platform for promoting civic engagement and representation.
I am excited to announce that I am currently working on expanding my advocacy efforts through new events and initiatives. One of my upcoming projects is a series of workshops aimed at engaging Gen Z voters and promoting sustainability. Additionally, I am developing a new curriculum for schools focused on voter education and civic engagement.
My story is one of resilience, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of equity and justice and it is all thanks to my mother.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three qualities have been most impactful in my journey: resilience, effective communication, and strategic thinking.
1. Resilience: Resilience has allowed me to persist through setbacks and maintain focus on my goals. My advice for those early in their journey is to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. Develop a mindset that views setbacks as temporary and learn to adapt and recover quickly. Surround yourself with supportive mentors and peers who can provide guidance and encouragement.
2. Effective Communication: Whether advocating for mental health initiatives, contributing to policy discussions at the United Nations, or writing op-eds for Young Voices, effective communication has been crucial. It involves not only articulating ideas clearly but also listening and engaging with diverse perspectives. To improve on this, practice public speaking, writing, and active listening. Engage in discussions and seek feedback to refine your communication skills. Participate in workshops, join speaking clubs like Toastmasters, and take courses that focus on writing and presentation skills.
3. Strategic Thinking: Strategic thinking has been essential in my roles, from organizing political campaigns to developing policies and programs. It involves analyzing complex situations, identifying key issues, and devising effective solutions. For those starting their journey, cultivate this skill by learning to think critically and holistically. Engage in activities that require planning and problem-solving, such as project management or strategic planning roles. Read extensively on topics related to your field, stay informed about current events, and seek opportunities to apply strategic thinking in real-world scenarios.
Advice for Development:
• Seek Mentorship: Find mentors who can provide guidance, share their experiences, and offer constructive feedback.
• Continuous Learning: Always seek to expand your knowledge through courses, workshops, and reading. Stay updated on trends and developments in your field.
• Practical Experience: Apply what you learn in real-world settings. Internships, volunteer opportunities, and project-based work can provide valuable hands-on experience.
By focusing on these qualities and continuously striving to develop them, you can build a strong foundation for a successful and impactful career.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
A book that has played an instrumental role in my development is my own work, Shugs Sings for Democracy. This children’s book is more than just a story; it encapsulates my values, experiences, and aspirations for a more engaged and informed society. It is something I wish I had growing up. Here are a few of the most valuable and impactful nuggets of wisdom from the book:
1. The Power of Storytelling: One of the central themes of Shugs Sings for Democracy is the power of storytelling to inspire and educate. Shugs, the young protagonist, learns about the importance of voting and civic engagement through her grandmother’s stories. This highlights the role that narratives play in shaping our understanding of the world and motivating us to take action. It reinforced for me the importance of using my voice and platform to share stories that can inspire positive change.
2. Representation Matters: The book features Black characters prominently, showcasing diversity and representation. This was a deliberate choice to ensure that children of all backgrounds can see themselves reflected in the stories they read. The impact of seeing characters who look like them can be profound, fostering a sense of belonging and possibility. This lesson is a reminder of the importance of inclusivity in all aspects of life and work, and it has influenced my approach to advocacy and leadership.
3. Civic Engagement is Fundamental: Shugs’ journey emphasizes the importance of civic participation from a young age. By illustrating the significance of voting and community involvement, the book encourages children to understand their role in democracy and the power they hold as individuals. This has reinforced my commitment to promoting voter education and civic engagement through my initiatives and professional work.
4. Intergenerational Wisdom: The relationship between Shugs and her grandmother, Darling, underscores the value of intergenerational dialogue and learning. Wisdom passed down through generations can provide a strong foundation for understanding and addressing contemporary issues. This concept has been pivotal in my personal and professional development, reminding me to seek guidance from those who came before me while paving the way for future generations.
5. Creative Expression as a Tool for Advocacy: Shugs uses her talent for singing to inspire change in her community, demonstrating that creative expression can be a powerful tool for advocacy. This aligns with my belief in using art and creativity to convey important messages and engage others in meaningful ways. It has influenced how I approach my work in the mental health sector, political advocacy, and even my participation in pageants.
Shugs Sings for Democracy has been a cornerstone in my journey, embodying principles that I strive to uphold in my personal and professional life. It serves as a testament to the power of stories, representation, civic engagement, intergenerational wisdom, and creative advocacy.
