Meet Amy DuBois

We were lucky to catch up with Amy DuBois recently and have shared our conversation below.

Amy, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

There are endless possibilities for customization and creativity in my industry! While the forefront of my business is calligraphy, it truly leads to so many other artforms. Most people think of calligraphy in the traditional sense, as flourished writing on paper using a pen and nib. However, modern calligraphers like myself have adapted to using a variety of other writing tools as well. I have learned to use a hand engraver to write on glass, a heated pen to emboss names on leather, a tiny paint brush to personalize handbags, and so much more. Each tool I use achieves different effects and styles. I truly love the challenge of writing on a variety of surfaces besides paper. And the versatility is refreshing and appealing to clients!

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Since I launched in 2017, my clientele has mostly consisted of event planners, stationery designers, and brides in Dallas. When my business started, I was mainly servicing the wedding and event industry. I focused solely on handwritten stationery goods such as unique place cards and invitation envelope addressing.

While I still offer those services, my product personalization has become extremely popular in recent years. I service all types of businesses and brands, and work with experiential marketing agencies nationwide. I offer an extensive variety of live calligraphy and art services at stores and at events. I personalize for Nordstrom, David Yurman, Louis Vuitton, MAC Cosmetics, Michael Kors, Tiffany & Co., Bluemercury, LTK, and more. It’s such a thrill seeing the recipient’s reaction both during and after the live art process!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

When starting out as a calligraphy artist, I think the two most important things to remember are patience and practice. It definitely helped me to have an art background before I got started as well. Also, take a lot of classes and enjoy the process!

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

Oh, yes! I LOVE collaborating with brands, event planners, stationery designers, PR firms, experiential marketing agencies, retail stores and more. There are so many opportunities to win your guests over with this artform, whether it’s on printed stationery or personalized on-site.

Nothing makes an event more memorable than an experience. And a handwritten touch makes it all more unique. Will guests or shoppers feel special when they see their name beautifully written by an artist? Absolutely! When your guests feel special, you can sense their appreciation. And it brings value to the overall experience. I go into further detail explaining the benefits of live art services on my website, so feel free to explore that to learn more!
