We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Elio Trevisan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Elio , so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I don’t think someone can really overcome the imposter syndrome. I personally just learnt how to coexist with it and use it at my advantage. I personalized it, made it a little voice in my hear: she can scream out loud some days, and be quieter other. She is my helper in pushing me forward everyday a little bit more – and when I need to make her quiet, I just make a self assessment of what I accomplished in the most objective way possible
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m an Italian immigrant that moved from Rome to New York City, with a little suitcase with me (I know it sounds like a 1875 sort of immigration story, but it’s true, I had to pack my whole life in a suitcase) and the hope of making it big. Now I’m more of a person who would like to thrive in the indie industrie – for movies – and tell stories that are captivating, moving away from the American stereotypes of good vs evil, or the rhetoric of “if you want you can”. What fascinates me the most is the human mind and how complicatedly beautiful and intense it can be. I’m currently establishing the “Nocturnal Reverie” and writing shorts and features. My hope is to become like my personal inspirations: Denis Villeneuve and Lars Von Trier
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
This is a hard question, because I don’t feel like I posses a different set of qualities from anyone else. But I wanna answer giving some suggestion of what not to do, because we learn more from mistakes than from qualities.
Learn to say no: sometimes it’s right to think about yourself first and helping someone else later.
Focus: be determined and passionate, be curious and accept that you’ll not like 100% of what your passion is, but you’ll need the 100%.
Don’t live in your ego: if you just please your ego, you will not really accomplish anything and you’ll only get a temporary feel of being better than others.
Ultimately just create art and do it with the purpose of telling something that it’s worth talking about.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m always looking for people to collaborate with. I love collaboration, it’s the best tool we have to create something meaningful for as many people as possible.
I’m looking for people who is willing to challenge their beliefs as much as I am
