We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bella Corich a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Bella, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
My love for music has been a part of me for my whole life. Since I was a little baby singing along to the Beatles in the car, learning to play piano at 5, and joining all the music clubs at school, I’ve always been compelled to music. Part of me wonders if it is just part of who I am. My whole family jokes that we have the music gene running in our blood. My great grandad toured across Europe with his Seven Grand Piano ensemble; my grandma always provided the entertainment at parties with her magnificent singing voice; my dad brought me in strollers to all the recording studios he was working out of producing bands and artists so its no surprised that I found myself in a similar field of work.
But it wasn’t until I was facing college applications that it really set in how important music is to me. I love school and learning but the idea of giving up music to pursue an academic bachelors degree just made me feel let down. I quickly realised how much of my life revolved around the music I listen to and play. I needed to make music a part of my life whether I liked it or not – haha!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a music producer, engineer, and songwriter. I’m originally from London, England but now am based in LA! I started my music career playing classical piano at 5 and went onto writing my own songs to then working in and out of studios around Los Angeles. I work primarily in the rock and pop fields and have had the pleasure to work with artists such as Coldplay, Matt Maeson, MARINA, Weezer, and more.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Motivation. The music industry is one filled of crazy people who all followed their hearts and passion. It is not an easy industry to work in and the love for music can often sadly lead to being exploited, overworked, and taken advantage of. It’s important to say yes to as many to keep busy and keep working on as many projects as you can be but it’s never worth it if you get burnt out or disillusioned. Giving yourself time for yourself has been one of the most important factors in keeping me motivated in those difficult times working in the industry!
2. Humility. Of course be proud of your achievements but no one wants to be around someone arrogant and self centred! There’s nothing worse than someone not being able to read a room and only talking about themselves!
3. Self care! Find something you love outside of music! Whether it’s riding a bike, painting, going to the beach, find something that makes you happy and fills up your battery when you’re not working Not only will it help you stay on top of your game it’ll also give you something interesting to talk or write a song about!
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Songwriters, artists, bands! I love collaborating. It’s a big reason why I fell in love with music and wanting to work in this industry. Without collaborating we wouldn’t have some of the best music created! If want to connect you can dm me on instagram or contact me through my website.
