Meet Chance

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Chance. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Chance below.

Chance, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.

I remember being a kid, maybe 9 or 10. I used to participate in these adjudicated piano performances. Yearly. You get a 5 for superior, 4 for excellent etc. It was done at a local university, and NORMALLY they were in a small practice room.

Well, on this particular Saturday morning, the practice room must have been treated as a temporary storage, as it was filled with chairs. So, I was informed that my recital was not to be performed there; rather, it was to be performed on the big stage in the university’s main concert hall.

I had no real time to think about it other than this: for whatever mysterious and to this day unknown reasons, I decided not to be scared. I remember making a conscious effort. I somehow knew it was my decision to make.

I went up on the stage, played a grand piano for the first time, performed my piece, and that was it.

After that, I never really got “scared’ or nervous before a performance of any kind. Ever again. And now, after performing all of my life, it really is a very natural experience for me. I could be on a stage in front of 5k or in front of a few people in a living room. My nerves simply don’t even process it.

(PS: got a superior 😎)

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

The Baby Goats: We are a heavy funk new wave dance punk band from the godforsaken San Fernando Valley. We believe we are building something special here in Los Angeles, and we are thrilled about the response we’ve been receiving.

We are about halfway through the release of our debut album—called “Electricity”—and will begin releasing the 2nd half starting in August 2024.

Our next BIG show is July 12th at Harvard & Stone in Hollywood. We’re playing with our friends Maudlin Strangers and Ghedi. Our goal is to sell it out. If you believe in live music… live ORIGINAL music…be a part of what we’re building.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

An interesting but potentially vague question, as admittedly it can be answered in so many ways. So let’s go with process, naivety and delusion, and execution.

I think you should be process not goal oriented. Don’t think what’s the score, how many followers do we have, how many burgers did we sell, how many people came to the event…. Instead, think about the process it took to make what you are or what you’re working on and just focus on that. In short, the goals will take care of themselves. I’m not saying don’t have goals; just don’t make them the source/end all be all of your passion or happiness. You’re destined to fail otherwise because you can win, but maybe not by the score you thought….but hey, you WON, you know? Ask yourself what is more important.

Naïveté and delusion play a lovely part in your aspirations too. There is every reason in the world not to do this (music, acting, opening a restaurant, business, whatever). It’s all hard. And everyone in your orbit will undoubtedly think themselves accurate in whether you should or shouldn’t. But: what say you? Ignore the daily negatives, as they can be quite boorish and frustrating. Just tune them out when possible. I say if you believe in yourself, and you’re determined, then you’re half way there. That said, the other half is kinda hard too haha.

That’s where execution comes in to play. Think of the greats. Emulate them. Learn from them. Don’t get claustrophobic in your thinking and believe the local is your competition. Our community of bands that we are friendly with? They are not our competition. They are our community. Our competition is Beyonce, Swift, Eilish, Grohl, etc. Somehow, we have to convince the public to spend their hard earned money and time on The Baby Goats, not them.

So work hard at what you do. Dream big, but execute. This isn’t easy, and it takes time, patience and a lot of sweat. Build yourself from the inside out, not the outside in. By that I mean, if you are a chef, first work on your recipes, not your restaurant design. Musician? Get those chops up, write those great songs before deciding what your IG account is going to look like.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

I think right now it’s growth. But quality growth. Not casual listeners; instead, the kind that really believe. It’s hard connecting to them, finding them because we don’t have the income to travel and tour. Eventually we feel there will be a sort of tipping point and boom! But for the moment, we are riiiiiiiigghhhhhttt there…behind the wall. And on the daily, that can be frustrating.

Our instagram following just passed 2k followers. For some that’s hilariously small. Us? We’re thrilled. We celebrate every victory along the way. We’re grateful they are all along the ride with us.

I’m not sure yet how to push this over the edge. But we are trying!
