Meet Ruben Maya

We recently connected with Ruben Maya and have shared our conversation below.

Ruben, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

My journey to finding my purpose is deeply connected to my commitment to improving the lives of women who have faced breast cancer and undergone partial or total mastectomy. Observing the emotional and physical impact of this disease, I felt a calling to make a tangible difference in the recovery of patients. This calling led me to develop a project focused on the creation, production, and commercialization of garments with integrated breast prostheses.

Talking to women who have gone through this process and medical professionals, I realized that patients not only have to deal with a disease that completely changes their lives but also with the lack of adequate prosthetic garments for their recovery. Utilizing my extensive experience in compression garments, I set out to develop garments with integrated breast prostheses with the primary goal of offering solutions that not only restore physical appearance but also aid in recovery, boosting confidence and self-esteem. These prostheses are designed to be versatile, comfortable, and functional, providing the necessary support during the recovery process and respecting the individuality and diverse needs of each woman.

With this project, I hope to help women regain their sense of normalcy and face life with renewed confidence. Additionally, the goal is to support important aspects that are not always visible, such as:

Reduction of health costs;
Elimination of the need for additional surgeries;
Minimizing risks and generating faster recovery;
Having fewer long-term complications;
Giving control over size and shape;
Immediate accessibility;
Less mental and emotional stress;
Emotional support;
Awareness and prevention;
Support in decision-making;
Improvement of quality of life;
Restoration of self-image;
Promotion of equal opportunities.

I believe that every person can find their purpose by seeking to support the needs of others. For me, the greatest achievement is seeing how my prostheses can make a tangible difference in the lives of women who have faced breast cancer, helping them regain their confidence and dignity. This project has taught me that true purpose is found in the act of serving and supporting those who need it most, and I remain committed to this mission every day.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I am a dreamer, a dreamer who learned to keep his feet on the ground after many hardships. But these hardships, far from making me give up, pushed me and continue to push me to keep moving forward. I believe that the ability to dream is essential for achieving goals, and the most beautiful thing is that we can learn to dream. We can all learn to see the things we would like to see in the future: the company we want to work for or, better yet, the company we want to develop, the people we would like to be associated with, the house where we would like to live, seeing our children grow up, and all the beautiful things that imagination offers us. However, we cannot only dream. We must take steps of faith to materialize those dreams. For me, this ability to visualize is very important for achieving set goals. I remember going to car shows and getting into all the cars I could, asking for business cards from the sellers and thanking them. After several years, I was able to own those vehicles. Of course, it sounds emotional, and it is, but there is a lot of work behind achieving it. What I mean is that dreaming is such a special quality that it will help you get wherever you want.

Speaking of values and qualities, since I was young, my parents taught me the value of helping the community. I grew up in a lower-middle-income neighborhood where there was a lot of need. Among the neighbors, we helped each other to improve our quality of life. For example, our family didn’t have a telephone at home, and we always relied on our neighbor’s phone. It was funny when people came looking for my dad because they needed him on the phone, and he had to go to the neighbor’s house to answer it. I remember this fondly because the community was very kind, and we supported each other. We had a television, and my friend Javier, the son of the neighbor who lent us the phone, came every Saturday to watch a program we liked because they didn’t have one. Those were good times when, as a child, I didn’t have many worries. We lived with the basics, and that was enough because my parents were cheerful and transmitted that joy to us.

Over time, I realized that we were of low income and learned about all the efforts my parents made to earn a living, always honorably. Here is the second quality that every entrepreneur must have: honesty. I remember that although we could ask for credit at the store to buy groceries, my parents always made sure to pay their bills, and that is why people trusted them. One day before my father died, while he was in the hospital, he asked me to take money to a man with whom he was pooling funds. Until his last day, my father kept his word and paid his debts. No one has ever claimed that my father owed them money; on the contrary, they always spoke well of him, and that is a memory I want my children to have of me. That is why honesty is a very important pillar.

Finally, I believe that perseverance is a fundamental quality. In life, you will knock on many doors, and most of them will close. Perseverance will help you not to give up until you achieve your dreams.

Today I talked to you about being dreamers, honest, and perseverant: three qualities among many others that need to be learned and developed to fulfill your purpose.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

As I mentioned earlier, I run a factory that produces compression garments designed to offer ideal solutions for all women. While we continue to aim for sustainable growth and dream of establishing our first production plant in the United States, I am also advancing a new project focused on developing breast prostheses for women who have undergone partial or total mastectomy. Therefore, I am inviting individuals who wish to contribute to this noble cause to join our team. We are looking for people with expertise in various fields, including healthcare, market expansion, prosthesis development, and related areas. Your support will be invaluable not only to this project but also to each woman who benefits from it. I guarantee that once you experience the satisfaction of helping those in need, you will gain a new horizon and purpose for your life.

I would like to share the special story of Mrs. Ana. She has been battling breast cancer for 21 years. Her daughter was also diagnosed with breast cancer 10 years ago, and at the time of this interview, it had been a couple of months since she underwent her last total mastectomy surgery. These women have joined our support team with the purpose of testing various prototypes of breast prosthesis garments that I am developing. The stories of these two brave women reflect the resilience and courage of many who fight for their lives every day. They remind us that many of our worries pale in comparison to the real struggles others face. These women give us the opportunity to open our eyes to a need that often goes unnoticed amidst our own problems. We realize that the chance to help others is more tangible than we might think.

So, I extend this invitation to those who wish to join this cause or any other that aims to assist others. Your involvement will not only make a difference in the lives of those you help but also give a profound sense of purpose to your own life.
