We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Margaret Teague. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Margaret below.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
America’s children are experiencing a mental health crisis. The remedy to this crisis is prevention work, & prevention work is exactly the work I do. I support kids ages 5 – 18 through 1:1 coaching and empowerment workshops. 1:1 Coaching supports youth as they navigate complexities such as anxiety, low self-esteem, friendships, organization & more. I offer four, 6-week workshops on Female Empowerment, Positive Masculinity, Drug & Alcohol Prevention & Current Event Discussions!
I feel like I have the most energizing job in the world. I get to teach teen girls what intimate partner violence is, how to set boundaries, and how to cultivate radical self-love. I get to teach boys how to identify their feelings, use healthy coping strategies and move through the world with empathy and compassion. I get to educate teens on how alcohol affects the body, how to use Narcan, & how to be social while staying safe. Few adults are educating teens on these relevant issues that have huge implications. These educational workshops are an investment in our teens’ mental health journeys & are nothing short of a joy and pleasure to facilitate.
I also get to support kids through 1:1 Coaching. The most exciting aspect of coaching is the opportunity to affirm kids’ feelings. I get to show up and emphasize the fact that their feelings are valid. Their lives have value. They are worthy of love and belonging such as they are, here and now. I also get to teach them practical tools and strategies that help them build a strong foundation as they embark on their life-long mental health journeys. Watching students set and meet goals is incredibly rewarding!
The fastest, most effective way to support our children with their mental health is to engage in mental health crisis prevention work. What’s most unique about my work is that I support children and teens with their mental health before they are in crisis. I teach them tools that they can use for life! When kids learn simple truths and helpful strategies around mental health, they can’t help but implement that information in their lives. When I was a child, I wish someone had told me that feelings aren’t facts, that our emotions, feelings and behaviors are all connected, and that simple breathing and tapping techniques can help regulate our moods tremendously!
I am thrilled to announce that this fall I will be facilitating a massive, Female Empowerment Workshop for middle and high school cheerleading teams! What does this mean for you? Whether you support a small group of students as a tutor, or lead a large school as the principal, my interactive, fun, education-focused workshops are for your middle and high school students. Are your students in another state? No worries, I support students virtually, too!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
tenacity. As an entrepreneur, you’re always trying new things and coming up with new ideas. While many of my ideas have turned into successful workshops and social emotional games among other things, many of my ideas have also failed miserably! It’s important not to give up, even when you’re not successful the first, second or third time.
What has also helped me on my journey is my experience as a classroom teacher and having that Masters of Education. My training as a teacher taught me important information such as how students learn, how to engage different learning styles, how to teach content through movement games and more.
My advice to others who are early in their journey, would be to not get discouraged from failure. I’ve had many workshops that have been successful, and I’ve also advertised workshops for weeks and have had zero sign ups. Instead of mourning something that was unsuccessful, use that unsuccess as data to inform your future choices.
