We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dawn Formo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dawn, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
My first job was at a gift shop in retail sales and customer service. From there I went to a front desk position at a Hotel, admissions at a University, followed by group sales at a Theatre before starting my own business. Throughout all those jobs I learned more about customer service and hospitality, and I fell in love with it. When the Theatre closed where I worked for 10 years it was devastating. I loved it there and truly thought that was my career home. After that I went to another company and was unfulfilled and just not happy. I still work very closely with that company. They are amazing but it was not where I was meant to be. I started soul searching and trying to find my way. I’d been thinking about my business concept and how to make it work, but I was uncertain and afraid. One of my best friends and I went to a Women’s Christian Conference and heard a skier talk about sometimes you just have to jump off the dock and trust God. So I listened to my Faith and “jumped”. The next week I got my business license and started looking for my first client. I am so proud, humbled and happy with how far we have come as a small business and how much we have grown in a relatively short amount of time.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
We are a contracted Group Sales team for our clients. We focus on bringing in groups of 15pp or more to the best venues on the Grand Strand including Barefoot Queen Riverboat, Brookgreen Gardens, Divine Dining Group Restaurants, Greg Rowles Legacy Theatre and Visit Murrells Inlet. Each venue is a wonderful destination for groups. We love our work because we not only work with and have great relationships with the best clients, vendors and partners but we also get to meet and enjoy customers from all over. The key to success in this business is happy customers, which is all done by showing the customers they matter and making their trip everything they want it to be and more!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Communication, Organization and Self Discipline.
Every job I’ve had has been dependent on communication. I am typically an over communicator and very organized. There are so many moving pieces when planning an itinerary and you don’t want to miss a beat. Communication is key to keep the pieces moving and in the right place. I am also a planner and very goal oriented. I make smaller goals for myself. Every goal met leads to larger goals and results. This keeps me motivated to be able to accomplish tasks and check them off my list. I have a lot of people who depend on me from customers to clients to family and pets and I never ever want to fail or disappoint anyone. In order to be that person, I know I need to stay on task, be where I need to be and do what I need to do. All of that stems from being self-disciplined and motivated. I heard a speaker once who said it perfect, “Motivation gets you going, but discipline keeps you growing”.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
Gave me great Work Ethic and Self Esteem. My Dad worked for Kraft Foods for over 30 years. His loyalty, success and work ethic were instilled in me from a young age. He’s the one that taught me to set small goals as this gives you steps to keep your motivation in order to reach the larger goals. I set this expectation for myself and for each of my clients as I have different goals for each one of them. He has always supported and encouraged me to be who I am. I admire my Dad in every way and always strive to be like him and make him proud. It’s amazing what you can learn and retain from watching someone you truly admire through success, failure, how they treat others and how they speak and act when no one is looking. Those who consistently choose integrity set a powerful example.
