Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Miranda Valentine. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Miranda , first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Imposter syndrome is something I still battle off and on when it comes to my writing, but I’ve learned that if you overcome it once, you can overcome it again and again.
I feel like we’ve all heard the advice “your voice matters” at least once in our life, but things change when you really start to believe that. You’re never going to be the only person who sets out to write a book, or start a podcast, or build a business, or whatever your dream is. There’s always going to be competition and you’ll wonder what the point is or what you could possibly contribute.
But the truth is, your voice does matter. And when I started to believe that what I personally had to offer was valid and important, I was able to realize that I deserve to write stories and share them just like all of the other authors who are out there working hard to do the same thing.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Miranda Valentine, and I write nostalgic, cozy romance with heart. I write romance about characters who feel genuine and relatable, and I always make the effort to include discussions of important topics such as mental health, family dynamics, and more. I love stories I can get lost in, but that also have an heir of “realness” to them, so that’s what I seek to create. I’ve often been told that my books are great romance options for readers who don’t typically like to read romance.
I have been an independent author since September of 2022. Publishing indie means I not only write my stories, but I’m also responsible for completing, or hiring someone to complete, every other aspect of the publishing process, from cover design, to editing and proofreading, to marketing, etc.
It has been, and continues to be, a learning experience. But I’m working to achieve the dream I’ve had since I was a little girl breezing through all the books I could get my hands on. I currently have three published books–Pulled to You, Everywhere We’ve Never Been, and Ghosts of You and Me. I’m on a little hiatus at the moment, but will be back with more books in the future!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. The will to constantly be researching and learning. When I decided I wanted to start publishing, I had no idea where to start. Luckily the internet exists, and there’s no shortage of information, or people to connect with and learn from.
2. Patience. It means everything when you’re trying to succeed creatively. Natural talent and hard work are a wonderful combination, but that still doesn’t mean you’re going to succeed to the level you’re hoping for right away. You have to try to stay calm and push through the disappointments that come along the way.
3. A true passion for what your’e doing. When you’re doing what you’re meant to do, you just know it. And that’s an important reminder for the hard days.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
Throughout my entire author journey, time has been the biggest and most consistent challenge.
There really never is enough time in a day. I have a full-time job, for a bit I was working a part-time job as well, and all of my writing/publishing/author social media tends to get fit in wherever I can. Some weeks my productivity is a well-oiled machine, other weeks I feel like I’m drowning.
That’s why breaks are important. Resetting your mind is important. You can’t create or work effectively when your brain has nothing solid to offer because you’re overtired or overwhelmed.
