Meet James Michael Hollenstein

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to James Michael Hollenstein. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

James Michael, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

I’ve always identified with what I was good at and used it to my advantage. Surrounding myself with positive influences made achieving my goals a lot easier.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

My Name is James Michael Hollenstein Aka Jimi Holl I host a weekly radio podcast called The Record Machine Show. My show features interviews and music from some of the top talent around the world. Behind every song is a story that’s the premise of The Record Machine Show, The Record Machine Show captivates you with the stories behind the songs in the artists’ own words, a simple idea that has proven so effective,

Growing up in New Jersey I discovered early on a love for music and talking and at age 19 began working as Disc Jockey performing throughout the tristate area, the mid-west and the west coast. In 2006 I decided to give radio a shot and started The Record Machine Show which aired on Live365 for several years and was also added on a few other radio stations.

In 2017 I decided to shift gears and changed the format of my show with the focus on artist interviews as opposed to just playing music. Each week I interview a different artist and feature their music with the stories behind the songs. To date I’ve interviewed a few hundred artists including stars like Suzi Quatro, Billy Vera, Walter Egan, Dean Friedman, Jellyroll Johnson, Pj Farley, David Reece, Gary Talley and Liberty Devitto to name a few.

I will also say I have discovered so many talented indie artists along the way, too many to list. Which to me is the most rewarding part about the show is meeting and chatting with so many talented artists around the globe.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

First thing I would say is that being passionate about what you are doing will get you a lot farther. Second, you have to have patience especially when it comes to the music business. You will cross paths with all kinds of personalities, some can be a lot more difficult to deal with. Being passionate about it makes it a lot easier. Lastly, staying up to date with the latest technology is another important quality, it will definitely give you an edge especially when you are being considered for new opportunities.
My advice is simple: focus on areas where you excel and seek opportunities that highlight them. Spend time with people who lift you up, avoid the negativity. And lastly life is too short. Have fun with whatever it is you choose to do in life.

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?

In my experience I found going all in on my strengths as opposed to my weaknesses was a lot more effective. Everyone is good at something, finding it is the key. When it comes to improving your overall happiness and well-being, focusing on your strengths may be a better strategy than targeting your weaknesses.
