We were lucky to catch up with Albert Cruz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Albert, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Confidence isn’t just about feeling good – it’s about knowing your worth, your capabilities, and your potential. For me, that confidence is built upon a foundation of knowledge.
My journey as a lifelong learner has been fueled by critical thinking and an insatiable curiosity. I firmly believe that education isn’t confined to a classroom; it’s a continuous pursuit. This thirst for knowledge, combined with a strong educational background, has not only shaped my career as an educator but also become the wellspring of my self-worth.
My passion for teaching isn’t just a profession; it’s a calling. There’s a profound sense of purpose and fulfillment in guiding others to discover their own potential. Witnessing their growth and success isn’t just rewarding – it’s a powerful reminder of my own ability to make a positive impact on the world.
My commitment to personal growth extends beyond the classroom. I thrive on setting and achieving goals, whether they involve fitness, mastering investment strategies, or simply delving into a captivating book. Each milestone reached reinforces my belief in my own capabilities and fuels my drive to keep pushing forward.
Amidst the pursuit of knowledge and achievement, I find solace and joy in creative expression. The melodies of music and the artistry of playing the piano offer a space for relaxation and reflection. These pursuits enrich my life and contribute to a well-rounded sense of self.
My unwavering confidence is bolstered by a network of love and support. My wife of over 55 years, my family, and my circle of friends create a tapestry of deep connections that remind me of my value as a husband, father, friend, and human being.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a professor of information systems at San Diego Mesa College, renowned for my expertise in knowledge management. With a Ph.D. in the field, I dedicate my time to educating and inspiring my students, fostering a passion for learning and growth. Residing in Menifee, Riverside County, California, I lead a fulfilling life alongside my wife, Teresa. My commitment to education and personal development is evident in my multifaceted interests and activities.
In addition to my academic pursuits, I am an avid music enthusiast and a beginner pianist. I find joy and relaxation in practicing the piano, allowing me to balance my professional responsibilities with my personal passions. My love for music is complemented by a keen interest in financial planning, an area in which I continually seek to expand my knowledge. I am dedicated to managing my investment portfolio successfully, applying the same rigorous analytical skills that have defined my academic career.
Goal setting is a central theme in my life. I am a staunch advocate for establishing clear, achievable objectives, whether they pertain to personal health, intellectual growth, or financial success. I was fortunate enough to share my insights on goal setting during a TEDx talk a few years back. Among my goals are maintaining physical fitness, engaging in world travel, and committing to lifelong learning through regular reading. My relentless pursuit of these goals exemplifies my belief in the transformative power of education and disciplined effort.
As I navigate my professional and personal endeavors, I remain a lifelong learner, always seeking new opportunities to expand my horizons. My dedication to helping others learn and grow, coupled with my own continuous self-improvement, makes me a respected figure in both academic and personal circles. My journey is a testament to the impact of passion, perseverance, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
In my own journey, I’ve found that three qualities weave a tapestry of meaning and purpose throughout my life.
First, resilience, the art of not merely bouncing back from life’s curveballs, but of using those experiences to become a more seasoned, adaptable version of myself. It’s about turning each stumble into a steppingstone on the path forward.
Then there’s empathy, that quiet strength that allows me to truly see the world through another’s eyes. It’s the magic ingredient in forging authentic connections and fostering collaboration. It’s the cornerstone of every healthy relationship I’ve been lucky enough to cultivate.
Finally, curiosity, my insatiable hunger to learn, question, and explore the world around me (and within me!). It’s the spark that ignites innovation, propels my personal growth, and keeps that childlike wonder alive. It’s the reason I never stop learning.
By nurturing these qualities within myself, I’ve discovered a profound sense of empowerment. I navigate life’s challenges with a bit more grace, build bridges of understanding with those around me, and find myself continually evolving into the person I aspire to be.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Yes, I am indeed interested in partnering or collaborating with others who share similar goals. An ideal collaborator or partner would have a passion for knowledge sharing, a commitment to lifelong learning, and a strong interest in financial planning and goal setting. Additionally, a good partner would bring diverse perspectives, be open to innovative ideas, and have a genuine desire to help others grow and succeed. Effective communication and mutual respect are also essential for a fruitful collaboration.
