Meet Qi

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Qi. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Qi below.

Hi Qi, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

Honestly, I don’t think I have super high self-esteem or confidence, but people often think I do. It’s funny because I don’t really know how I come across as confident. I guess it’s because I’m confident in the things I know I can do well, like yoga, or things I’m passionate about, like acting. I’m not sure how good my acting is, but my desire to act and take risks helps me appear confident. Even though I’m actually pretty sensitive and often nervous, my passion for acting pushes me to be brave and take risks. When I was a kid, I had this mantra: fake it till you make it. My confidence comes from my willingness to fail and the strong desire to pursue what I love, which often overshadows my nervousness and low self-esteem

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m an actor. I spent four years doing physical theater in Australia before moving to the US. Here, I studied acting and performed in some off-Broadway shows and short films, which made it into various film festivals.

What excites me most about my work is that it doesn’t feel like work at all. Acting feels like being a kid again, playing and immersing myself in different circumstances in a professional way. One of the most exciting aspects is meeting all kinds of people on set. We come from different backgrounds, each with unique stories and dreams, which is incredibly motivating for me.

Working with directors to bring their vision to life is also thrilling. Acting has helped me express myself better. I used to be very expressive on the outside but struggled to express emotions like anger or grief. Through acting, I’ve been able to explore and understand my inner world, and I hope my work can inspire others to do the same.

I’m currently working on my new film with Paradox Films called Grey Dwarf Stars. In this film, I’m playing the lead role of Chen. Chen is a character who feels like his life is out of control and questions the meaning of his existence. This theme feels especially relevant now with so many people experiencing layoffs and profound changes. The story revolves around Chen and DALL·E being stuck in an elevator where they discover they share similar past experiences. Through this, Chen reflects deeply on the purpose of life and why we’re here. I believe this narrative resonates deeply with the current state of affairs.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back, I’d say the three qualities that really shaped my journey are:

1. Determination: I’ve always been dead set on acting. It’s what I’m passionate about, and I’ve always known it’s what I want to do with my life.

2. Curiosity and Learning: I love learning new things. The more I learn, the more I realize how much I still don’t know. It keeps me growing.

3. Impulsiveness: This one’s a mixed bag. In acting, being spontaneous has often paid off. I take my work seriously but try not to take life too seriously, which means I’m not afraid to take risks.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I’m always looking to collaborate with filmmakers, writers, playwrights, and producers. I love hearing people’s stories and working with those who are passionate and have fun with their craft. For example, I have a producer friend who always brings a lot of joy and eagerness to her work.

I’m particularly interested in partnering with filmmakers and writers who have strong points of view and personal stories they want to share. If you’re passionate, eager, and enjoy what you do, I’d love to connect and explore collaboration opportunities.
