Hi Khalua, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

As someone who has often found themselves as the only brown person in the room, I have learned to navigate these situations with confidence and grace. I believe that my unique perspective and experiences bring value to any space, and I make sure to shine as bright as I can, not afraid to share my gifts and talents.

Throughout my journey, I have embraced my identity and used it as a source of strength rather than a limitation. I have learned to speak up, share my ideas, and make my presence known, knowing that my voice matters and deserves to be heard. By staying true to who I am and embracing my authenticity, I have been able to effectively communicate and connect with others, earning recognition and respect for my contributions.

I am Khalua Kinard, a highly skilled aesthetician with over 17 years of experience in the beauty industry. Graduating from AVEDA, I have established myself as a renowned facialist, known for my exceptional skills and techniques. With a celebrity client list and experience in 5-star hotels, I am sought after for my expertise in skincare and commitment to helping clients achieve their best skin.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

As a skincare professional, my top three qualities that have greatly contributed to my success are:

1. Intuition: Trusting my gut has consistently led me to make the right decisions and choices in my career. Listening to my intuition has guided me in providing the best possible care and treatments for my clients.

2. Education: Continuous learning and staying updated on the latest skincare trends, products, and techniques have been essential in advancing my skills and knowledge in the industry. Education has empowered me to deliver top-quality services to my clients.

3. Intention: Setting clear intentions in my work has been key in providing focused and valuable skincare services. Being intentional in my approach allows me to personalize treatments and address the specific needs and goals of each client effectively.

How would you describe your ideal client?

I focus on attracting new clients who entrust me with the selection of their skincare products and prioritize consistent facial treatments.

The perfect client for me is someone who values my recommendations, commits to regular facials, and communicates openly about their level of dedication. This transparency allows me to provide customized instructions and support to help them achieve optimal results for their skin.
