We were lucky to catch up with Alma Thomas recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alma, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I am eager to share my personal journey, despite the numerous obstacles I have encountered, with the hope of inspiring others. In 2009, I experienced the loss of my only son. Subsequently, I authored two solo books titled “Dream Killers” and “From the Waiting Room to the Recovery Room.” A few years following my son’s passing, the apartment complex in which I resided caught fire, leaving me homeless for a period of time. Later on, I underwent a divorce from my husband, who struggled with substance abuse, leading to significant financial hardship for me. Approximately 2 1/2 years ago, I suffered a severe stroke that affected my right side. Despite these adversities, I have managed to overcome them, and from my hospital bed, I seek to inspire those facing similar challenges to accept the things beyond their control and be grateful for the abilities they still possess. I am thankful that, despite suffering a severe stroke, I did not lose my cognitive and communication skills, which is a common occurrence for many individuals in similar situations. I believe in the importance of motivating and inspiring individuals to persevere, regardless of the challenges they encounter. It is crucial never to relinquish one’s dreams or purposes, even when faced with adversity. Life may present unexpected obstacles, but one must not allow those to impede progress toward achieving goals and ambitions. Maintaining resilience and determination is the key to success, and with the right mindset, overcoming any obstacle is possible. Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Alma Collins Thomas is a multifaceted professional with a broad spectrum of skills and achievements. She holds the titles of an ordained minister, educator, motivational speaker, playwright, and author. Alma is a holder of two Bachelor of Science degrees, one in Human Services with a focus on Children and Families and another in Christian Studies. In addition, she imparts her knowledge as a Bible school teacher. Alma has been a co-author of several books, including “Love, Marriage, and Divorce,” and is an active member of Sisters with Purpose. She is the author of two debut books, “Dream Killers” and “From the Waiting Room to the Recovery Room.” Alma is also a single mother of two children, Sabria and Tysean. Tragically, Tysean passed away in 2009, leaving an indelible mark. Despite facing adversity, Alma is a stroke survivor, having experienced a debilitating stroke two years ago. Despite her circumstances, she continues to motivate and inspire others from her hospital bed. I am working on an anthology of parents who have suffered the loss of a child. I call myself a dream ignitor because I like to stir up other people dreams
