Meet Wesley Fisher

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Wesley Fisher a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Wesley , thanks for sitting with us today to chat about topics that are relevant to so many. One of those topics is communication skills, because we live in an age where our ability to communicate effectively can be like a superpower. Can you share how you developed your ability to communicate well?

I wasn’t always outgoing; in fact, I used to be quite shy and introverted. I’m still an introvert, but I’ve learned to come out of my shell, especially when I got to college. While I had friends and could communicate with people in high school, it wasn’t until college that I truly understood the value of connecting with others and stepping out of my comfort zone.

In college, I encountered a variety of experiences and activities that required me to take risks. One significant step I took, which might surprise some people, was joining the cheerleading team. Despite being a “guy’s guy” who played sports like wrestling and football in high school, I decided to try something different. Joining a collegiate cheerleading team required a different kind of strength and coordination, as I had to throw girls around instead of just tackling opponents.

Cheering for four years in college, including performing in front of stadiums full of thousands of people, was a transformative experience. I even cheered at Ohio State University, performing in front of nearly a hundred thousand people on national TV, and competed nationally in Florida at Walt Disney World. These experiences significantly helped me come out of my shell.

Fast forward to my business journey, which also began in college. I was introduced to various business ideas and network marketing. Through these experiences, I learned the importance of effective communication and connecting with people from different walks of life.

Now in business, I’ve learned that communication is a crucial skill to master. In college, I began reading various books on communication and engaging in network marketing, which helped build my confidence. I started hosting home meetings and traveling to speak in front of people. Although I didn’t make much money in network marketing, the experience was invaluable in developing my communication skills.

Today, I am very successful in business, having built multiple multi-million dollar businesses. I attribute much of my success to my ability to communicate effectively.

Before diving fully into business, I was a school teacher for eight years, specializing in special education. Teaching helped me build patience and connect with people on a deeper level. It wasn’t until the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-2021 that I transitioned from teaching to becoming a full-time entrepreneur. Since then, I’ve successfully built three multi-million dollar businesses, largely thanks to my communication skills.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

1. Effective Communication:
Effective communication has been a cornerstone of my success. Whether it was during my time as a teacher, in my network marketing days, or now as a business mentor, the ability to convey ideas clearly and connect with people has been crucial.

Advice: For those early in their journey, focus on improving your communication skills. Read books, attend workshops, and practice public speaking. Join groups like Toastmasters to refine your speaking abilities. Good communication can open doors, build relationships, and facilitate better business deals.

2. Resilience and Adaptability:
Resilience and adaptability have allowed me to navigate the inevitable challenges and setbacks of entrepreneurship. From transitioning from teaching to full-time entrepreneurship during the COVID-19 pandemic to building multiple successful businesses, staying resilient and adaptable has been key.

Advice: Cultivate resilience by embracing challenges as learning opportunities. Adaptability comes from being open to change and willing to pivot when necessary. Stay informed about industry trends and continuously seek ways to innovate and improve your business practices.

3. Networking and Relationship Building:
Building a strong network has been instrumental in my journey. From the connections I made in college to the professional relationships I’ve developed in business, networking has provided support, opportunities, and valuable insights.

Advice: Start building your network early. Attend industry events, join professional organizations, and seek out mentors. Focus on building genuine relationships rather than just accumulating contacts. Offer value to others and be proactive in maintaining your network.

Additional Tips:
Seek Mentorship: Find mentors who can provide guidance and share their experiences. Learning from others’ successes and failures can accelerate your growth.
Invest in Continuous Learning: Stay curious and invest in your education. Whether through formal education, online courses, or self-study, continuous learning is essential.
Set Clear Goals: Define your goals and create actionable plans to achieve them. Regularly review and adjust your plans as needed.
Embarking on an entrepreneurial journey is both challenging and rewarding. By focusing on communication, resilience, and networking, you can build a strong foundation for success. Stay dedicated, keep learning, and be persistent in pursuing your dreams.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

One book that has played an important role in my development is “The 4-Hour Workweek” by Tim Ferriss. This book fundamentally changed my approach to work and productivity, introducing me to the concept of lifestyle design. Here are a few of the most valuable nuggets of wisdom from the book:

The New Rich: Ferriss introduces the concept of the “New Rich,” individuals who prioritize time and mobility over material wealth. This idea reshaped my goals, focusing not just on earning money but also on creating a lifestyle that allows me to enjoy my time and experiences fully.

Pareto Principle (80/20 Rule): One of the most impactful lessons was applying the 80/20 rule to my work and life. This principle, which states that 80% of results come from 20% of efforts, helped me identify and focus on the most critical tasks that drive the most significant results, thereby increasing my efficiency and effectiveness.

Outsourcing and Automation: The book emphasizes outsourcing and automating routine tasks to free up time for more important activities. By delegating and automating repetitive tasks, I’ve been able to scale my businesses more efficiently and focus on strategic growth and personal development.

Mini-Retirements: Instead of deferring life enjoyment to traditional retirement, Ferriss advocates for taking “mini-retirements” throughout life. This concept encouraged me to take breaks and enjoy life’s pleasures, ensuring a balanced and fulfilling journey rather than waiting until the end of my career.

These principles from “The 4-Hour Workweek” have significantly influenced how I manage my time, structure my businesses, and pursue my goals. The book’s approach to achieving more with less has been instrumental in my success and in building a lifestyle that aligns with my values and aspirations.
