Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jaeson Frederique. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jaeson, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
A few ways I developed my confidence and self-esteem was by continuously learning, and practicing consistently to help learn and refine technical skills so I could get quicker to adapt and work under varying conditions no matter the shoot. I also sought constructive criticism from other creatives and embraced their feedback with an open mind. I set achievable small goals instead of trying to take on one big goal at a time and celebrated all those small wins. Whether it was posting multiple times in a week or shooting a variety of different shoots in a short time, I knew I was getting better and better by the day and growth and improvement were all that mattered to me.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a freelance videographer and photographer. I mainly shoot basketball and other sports-related content but I have recently been getting more into portrait photography and advertisement videos. The most exciting or special part about what I do is storytelling and creating emotion through what you see and hear. Whether it’s making a hype video to rally a team or school up before a big game or a cinematic recap of a heartbreaking loss, the emotions created through different camera angles, music, and sound effects are unmatched. For the most part, people love sports, so being able to engage an audience and show high-level action on the court or field in a different way than it’s broadcasted is special to me. I recently started a new documentary on an underrated basketball player in Covington, trying to get recruited and play at the next level. The first episode covers who he is, a little bit about his journey to get to where he is now, and his weekend playing with his AAU team. It’s up on YouTube now, “Nick Durham: Diamond In The Rough|Episode 1”. Give it a watch for me!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
It’s hard to pick just three impactful qualities in my journey so far but a few important ones definitely have to be not comparing your journey to others and running your own race, being creative and open-minded to trying new things, and finally being consistent and relentless when chasing after the goals you set for yourself.

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I believe that is more important to try and be more well-rounded and invest effort in improving areas you aren’t as strong in. Having multiple strengths is better than just having one big strength. I think you should use what you are already strong in and try to translate those strengths to your weak areas. For example, if I’m strong at recording basketball I can take some of those same techniques and apply them to different sports. The dynamics are going to be different but for the most part, you should be able the common denominators between what you are strong at and what you are trying to get better at.
