We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jocylynn Coleman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Jocylynn, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

Before I started my entrepreneurial journey, I worked as a Controller for a Developer. I remember a particularly challenging project where every decision I made was questioned simply because it came from me. It was a a multi-million dollar development that required precision and strategic financial planning. In time, I became the go-to expert, offering insights that no one else had considered. My detailed financial reports saved the project from potential pitfalls while earning me the respect I deserved. But it wasn’t just about mastering the technical skills. It was about embodying confidence and a sassy determination that said, “I belong here.” Being the only black woman in the room taught me resilience and the importance of staying true to my unique vision. It wasn’t just about fitting in; it was about standing out, making my mark, and inspiring others to do the same. I am the CEO of Affluent Consulting Group in New Orleans, Louisiana. I chose to start this business because I wanted to create wealth strategies that allow business owners to operate in the black without fear of IRS Audit or jail time. My expertise extends beyond traditional financial services; I am also an Executive Coach, Accountant, QuickBooks Trainer, and Tax Strategist.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Curiosity and Lifelong Learning – Keep a curious mindset. I constantly seek to expand my knowledge in diverse areas which has been beneficial in my growth and problem-solving abilities.

Adaptability and Resilience – Embrace change, learn from setbacks, and adjusting my approach to matters has enabled me to navigate complex challenges and capitalize on emerging opportunities.

Effective Communication – Sharpening my skills to actively listen, clearly articulate ideas, and tailor my messaging to different audiences has been crucial for collaboration, influence and impact.

Remember, entrepreneurship is a journey of continuous learning and growth. Focus on developing these key areas, but also remain open to discovering and nurturing other skills that may be particularly relevant to your specific entrepreneurial path.
