We were lucky to catch up with Ieisha/Thomas Rice recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ieisha/Thomas, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Ieisha/Thomas: Despite my initial awareness of being the only one in the room, I don’t let it hinder my efforts to connect with others. I actively engage with people, focusing on understanding them beyond initial impressions. This approach has allowed me to form deeper, more authentic connections.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
We are the leaders and bartenders of Vibe Box Mobile Bartending, in business since April 2023. Inspired by an adult wine truck in SC and Ieisha’s dream of bartending, we converted a bus into our mobile bar. Though Barlo, our bus bar, is still a work in progress, we provide top-notch service with our portable bar. In VA, we operate as a dry hire, providing all services except alcohol. Exciting updates are coming, including Barlo hitting the road. Follow our journey on social media as we expand!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Passion and fun: Loving what you do ensures it never feels like a job
Stepping outside comfort zones: Growth happens when you embrace challenges and new experiences
Like-minded individuals: Surrounding yourself with supportive, driven people enhances motivation and success
To develop these skills, we suggest reflecting on your own dreams and goals, practicing activities outside your usual routine, and attending network meetings to connect with those who share your journey or have valuable experience.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
Ieisha: The most impactful thing my mother did for me was demonstrate resilience. Her ability to rebuild after a long marriage has been empowering. I’m currently in the process of rebuilding myself through healing and self-discovery… the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Thomas: One of the most significant experiences in my life was being raised by a single mom. I never knew my father, so I grew up without a paternal role model. This situation taught me resilience, patience, and a strong drive to be the best I can be. It made me understand that life isn’t easy, and that one can be overwhelmed by it if not careful. However, it also showed me that by fighting for my goals, believing in my potential, and constantly pushing myself out of my comfort zone, I can achieve great results throughout my life.
