Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Aaron Schmit. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Aaron, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Certainly, Aaron. Here’s a narrative on how you, Aaron Schmit of Schminati Exclusive Artwork, overcame imposter syndrome:
—
Overcoming imposter syndrome was a significant milestone in my journey as an artist and entrepreneur. When I first began painting in June 2020, my work quickly gained recognition, and I found myself in the spotlight more than I had ever anticipated. Despite the acclaim, I often felt like an imposter, doubting my abilities and fearing that I didn’t truly belong in the art world.
The roots of my imposter syndrome ran deep, influenced by years of self-doubt and personal challenges. My past battles with alcoholism and the over-prescription of medications during my youth left scars that sometimes clouded my self-perception. Even as I received praise and accolades, a part of me struggled to believe that I was deserving of such success.
However, several key factors helped me overcome these feelings:
1. **Acknowledging My Journey:** Reflecting on my personal history and the obstacles I had overcome, I began to see my achievements in a new light. Surviving a near-fatal car accident, overcoming addiction, and finding solace in art were not just random events; they were testaments to my resilience and strength.
2. **Embracing Authenticity:** My “trash-flower” portraits, each a unique creation inspired by the circumstances of my life, became a symbol of authenticity. They weren’t just artworks; they were pieces of my soul, and knowing that people appreciated them for what they represented helped me feel more genuine in my role as an artist.
3. **Connecting with My Audience:** The personal connections I made with those who purchased my art played a significant role in dismantling my imposter syndrome. Hearing stories of how my work resonated with them and brought beauty into their lives reinforced the idea that my art had real value.
4. **Support System:** The support from my community, family, and friends was invaluable. Being voted Vermilion County’s top local artist by 240,000 individuals was a profound affirmation of my talents. This external validation, coupled with the encouragement from those close to me, provided the confidence boost I needed.
5. **Continuous Growth:** I embraced a mindset of continuous learning and growth. Instead of seeing my lack of formal art training as a deficiency, I saw it as an opportunity to constantly improve and innovate. Each new piece I created was a step forward, a tangible proof of my evolving skill set.
Through these experiences, I learned to quiet the negative voices that fueled my imposter syndrome. I accepted that it’s normal to have doubts, but those doubts do not define my reality. Instead, I focused on the tangible impact of my work and the joy it brought to others.
Today, I stand proud of my journey and my identity as an artist. I no longer feel like an imposter but rather as someone who has earned his place through perseverance, authenticity, and a genuine passion for art. My story is a testament to the power of self-belief and the transformative impact of embracing one’s true self. So much so that i have the words STAY TRUE tattooed on my knuckles.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Absolutely, here’s a tailored response for the interview based on your bio:

I am Aaron Schmit, a 34-year-old nationally recognized painter and the proprietor of Schminati Exclusive Artwork. My journey into the world of art began in June 2020, amidst a personal battle with alcoholism. Finding solace and purpose in painting, I not only overcame my addiction but also discovered a profound passion that reshaped my life. Since then, I have maintained sobriety and found a new sense of fulfillment and creativity.
My art, particularly the Trash Flower Collection, has garnered widespread acclaim. These pieces, which resemble real flowers but with unique and vibrant color schemes, can be found in residences and establishments across 38 states. Each artwork in this ongoing series is accompanied by a signed certificate of authenticity, ensuring its originality and value. The Trash Flower Collection is deeply personal, named after the circumstances of my life when I created each piece, and it continues to be a journey rather than a culmination.
What excites me most about my work is the ability to transform personal experiences and emotions into something beautiful that resonates with others. Each piece of art is not just a visual delight but also a narrative of resilience and transformation. Being voted Vermilion County Illinois’ top local artist by 240,000 individuals has been a humbling acknowledgment of my journey and dedication.
Currently, I am focused on expanding the reach of Schminati Exclusive Artwork. I have some exciting events and product launches lined up, including exclusive collaborations with other artists. Additionally, I am exploring opportunities to bring my art to new states and perhaps even international markets, aiming to inspire and connect with a broader audience.
My story is one of overcoming adversity and finding redemption through creativity. From surviving a severe car accident to battling addiction, each chapter of my life has shaped the artist I am today. I believe that art has the power to heal and inspire, and through my work, I hope to share that message with the world.
And ive done about 6 new murals in the last 3 months. 1 of them which is in crescent city Illinois, just recently a few days before my birthday has screwed me terribly out of $775 of my payment for a mural i completed for the town. They wrote me a check without my name on it, and refused to make it right after it being brought to their attention. So financially im set way back from that and its hurt the pockets pretty bad. been incredibly busy this way. But I wouldn’t change it for the world.. I’ve also been featured in 3 newspaper articles and the Illinois state representative sent me a personalized card from himself acknowledging that he has seen some of my work and that he really does appreciate it and that he wishes me continued success in the near future which was really cool
!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
—
Looking back, three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge have been most impactful in my journey: resilience, creativity, and authenticity.
**Resilience:** Overcoming severe alcoholism and the challenges that came with it required immense resilience. This quality has been fundamental in every aspect of my journey, from battling addiction to rebuilding my life through art. My advice for those early in their journey is to cultivate resilience by facing challenges head-on and viewing setbacks as opportunities for growth. Embrace difficulties as part of the process and keep pushing forward, no matter how tough it gets.
**Creativity:** Discovering painting during a low point in my life unlocked a creative potential I didn’t know I had. This creativity not only helped me overcome personal struggles but also allowed me to build a successful career as an artist. For those starting out, it’s crucial to explore different forms of creativity and find what resonates with you. Don’t be afraid to experiment and take risks in your creative endeavors. Sometimes, the most unexpected paths lead to the most fulfilling outcomes.
**Authenticity:** My artwork, especially the Trash Flower Collection, is deeply personal and authentic, reflecting my life’s journey and emotions. Authenticity has been key in connecting with people and making a meaningful impact through my art. I advise newcomers to stay true to themselves and their experiences. Authenticity is what sets you apart and creates a genuine connection with others. Share your story, your struggles, and your triumphs, and let that authenticity shine through in your work.
For those early in their journey, focus on developing these qualities by staying resilient in the face of challenges, nurturing your creative spirit, and always being authentic to who you are. These elements will not only guide you through tough times but also help you build a meaningful and impactful career.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
When I reflect on my life, the most impactful thing my parents did for me was not being there. At first glance, this might seem like a painful statement, but it’s a truth that has profoundly shaped my journey, both personally and professionally.
Growing up, I faced many challenges that were exacerbated by my parents’ absence. My father lived just four blocks up the road from me, yet he never spoke to me my entire life. This physical proximity coupled with emotional distance was a stark reminder of his absence. My mother, on the other hand, has been struggling with alcoholism since the early 90s. Her constant state of inebriation meant that she was not present to provide the support and guidance a child needs. These circumstances forced me to navigate my formative years largely on my own, creating a crucible for my resilience.
Without a stable support system, I learned to rely on my inner strength to overcome obstacles. This resilience was tested time and again, especially when I fell into severe alcoholism from the age of 16 to 29. My parents’ absence meant I had no one to turn to during these dark times, but it also meant that my eventual recovery and triumph over addiction were entirely self-driven. When I discovered painting in June 2020, it wasn’t just a new hobby; it was a lifeline. It marked the beginning of my sobriety and a new chapter in my life. Art became my therapy, my means of processing pain, and my path to healing.
The absence of my parents also fostered a profound sense of **creativity**. In a household where emotional support was lacking, I found solace and expression in art. My Trash Flower Collection, a series of over 120 unique portraits resembling real flowers but in distinct color schemes, is a testament to this creativity. These pieces are not just artworks; they are narratives of my life’s journey, each one named after the circumstances surrounding its creation. The first piece, which sold quickly to a woman from Kentucky,
In 2010, I survived a harrowing car accident that could have ended my life. Falling asleep at the wheel, I veered onto the wrong side of the interstate, and my car collided with guard cables, splitting it in half. Miraculously, I emerged unscathed. This incident was a stark reminder of my mortality and the precariousness of life. It was a turning point, reinforcing my belief that every moment is an opportunity to create something meaningful.
In conclusion, the most impactful thing my parents did for me was not being there. Their absence, while painful at times, became a catalyst for my personal and professional growth. It forced me to become resilient, creative, and authentic—qualities that are now the bedrock of my life and art. As I continue to create and share my work, I carry with me the lessons of my past, transforming adversity into beauty and inspiration.
