We were lucky to catch up with Gavin Bacher recently and have shared our conversation below.
Gavin, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I found my purpose in the obstacles set in front of me. When I was younger I developed a very intense anxiety disorder that affected my social and professional life. It hindered my education the most. I was afraid to go to school and make new friends. I hated this feeling of being small. I used this fear as fuel to change my life for the better. I learned how to pinpoint these anxieties. As I overcame and did things that triggered this anxiety I gained strength. This strength fueled me to discover new triggers for my anxiety and overcome them as well. This became my purpose. Finding fears and discovering how to overcome them. Doing things that scare me as much as I can while I have time on this earth to do so. Now on my journey of purpose, I found great love in sharing this story. Using my experience to help others overcome and find their purpose.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Right now I’m still growing my skills as a creative professional. Im taking courses at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Advertising and Branding honing my designs and strategies. While taking these courses Im a part of some incredible student communities that cultivate collaboration and Leadership. The most current role is as a Lead pre-college assistant for SCAD’s summer programs. This is where im learning to manage teams over 70, look over residence life, manage bus routes, and present orientation in front of 200+ participants a week. Other roles I play are branding for student organizations and films, Im a leader within the ambassador program at SCAD, as well as a director for the SCAD Ad club helping create opportunities for the ADBR department at the university. Overall, Im trying to take in as much as I can before I actually leap into the industry. For now, Im living in the moment as a future leader for these future creatives around me and I can’t wait to see what we all do next.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The most important qualities that have led me through my journey thus far are empathy, passion, and ANXIETY. Empathy has led me to understand a wide variety of realities. Knowing why people make the choices they do is the first step in being a successful leader. The second is Passion. Having that fire in your chest to want to succeed is pivotal. I found that this isn’t just about your interests but about your philosophy. Passion is a way of thinking! This goes hand and hand with purpose! Anxiety has been a force in driving me towards success. Understanding and accepting that sometimes your emotions and obstacles can’t be controlled!

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
The biggest growth journey I’ve been on is the path to understanding. Not only am I learning what makes a successful designer but also what makes a successful leader. A big driving force in this radical growth has been surrounding myself with the people I look up to in leadership. I also try to surround myself with the creatives I look up to. It’s not about designing together or even leading together! Just sharing collective experiences together at some point every week. My philosophy surrounding growth and gaining knowledge is curating the atmosphere that cultivates that type of inner change. I don;t want to be content at this moment in my journey to success. It’s about consistent and constant growing and pushing for new and exciting things!
