Meet Amber Robinson

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amber Robinson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Amber, thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout

As a therapist, it’s important to take care of yourself regularly to battle burnout. I try to incorporate 3 B’s in navigating burnout – balance, boundaries and breaks. Sometimes my job can be really heavy. On those days, I try to achieve as much balance as possible by doing something lighthearted like reading, going for a walk or laughing with my partner. Boundaries have been KEY for me as a therapist, but this did not come easy. I had to learn the hard way how important boundaries are. A common misconception is that boundaries are put in place to push people away, but the opposite is actually true. Boundaries are set in place to keep people close. They are how you can show love to yourself and others at the same time. Lastly, breaks! This was another one that wasn’t easy for me to incorporate. I came from a culture of “work, work, work,” but you can’t do that in therapy. You have to take breaks. What I try to remember is that I show up for others and myself the best when I am rested and centered and that comes with taking small breaks throughout the day.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a licensed psychotherapist and founder of A Road Through Therapy Group. At A Road Through, we believe that the foundation of effective therapy lies in the relationship we build with you. Our approach is one of peership, where therapy unfolds naturally, like a conversation with a trusted friend. Life is hard enough – therapy doesn’t have to be.

As therapists, our specialties have developed naturally as they are also our lived experiences. Whether you’re a creative and your thoughts and emotions are getting the best of you, you’re at a crossroads in life or you’re struggling in your relationship, we are here to help. Think of us as your co-pilot, here to support and empower you as you navigate the path to personal growth and well-being.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The three things that I think were the most impactful in my journey were believing in myself, not being afraid to ask questions and discipline. I grew up with my mom always finding a way. We didn’t always have a lot, but my mom always figured it out. This is something I’ve carried with me and I’m so proud of that. I know that if I really put my mind to something, I can always figure it out. Secondly, I had to get comfortable asking questions and asking for help. This was not easy for me, but if I could one piece of advice to young entrepreneurs it would be this. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Ideally, you’d have someone you can turn to who has done what you’re looking to do, but I know this isn’t always the case. But in this day and age, there is so much information available to us online. Do your research and never stop learning! Lastly, having discipline is crucial. The first two points won’t matter if you are not disciplined in doing what you intend. You have to be disciplined even on the days you don’t feel like it – especially on those days.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?

I was assigned “Man’s Search for Meaning” by Viktor Frankl in grad school and to this day, it has been one of the most impactful books I’ve ever read. It’s about the journey of a psychotherapist who is captured twice in Nazi journey. Without giving two much away, this book really highlights how crucial having a purpose and meaning in your life is.
