We were lucky to catch up with Silvio Correa recently and have shared our conversation below.
Silvio, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I developed my confidence and self-esteem alongside my father, who was a merchant, an excellent tailor with his own shop and from time to time I would go to his shop. His communicative nature and strong work ethic inspired me. I started working very early at the age of 14 in a large company with several departments and the experience with my father instilled in me valuable skills and a sense of self-confidence that were fundamental in shaping my confidence and self-esteem.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I worked as a commercial contact for two advertising agencies in Brazil, while also indulging my passion for surfing and barbecues on the weekends on the renowned Maresias beach. Known as the “barbecue guy”, I frequently organized barbecues in the city and on the beach. In 2000, I moved to Los Angeles to work at a good friend’s company, where I continued my barbecue crazy and quickly gained popularity again.
My barbecue skills led me to open a catering company in 2003 with some friends and potential investors, with growth we even served two tons of meat at the Coachella Music Festival for three days. This success inspired us to open a restaurant in 2008, Silvio’s BBQ in Hermosa Beach a local favorite, which won the Easy Reader News Choice award for Best of the Beach with Best Ethnic Barbecue for 8 consecutive years. After 15 years, I decided to sell my share in the restaurant and return to my roots as a Personal Chef doing a lot of private parties.
In 2018 I founded Tropicali Brazilian Cuisine, a catering company specializing in corporate events with a good reputation in the industry. What fascinates me most is how my journey challenged my father’s initial doubts about the future of my passion for barbecue. Despite his skepticism that cooking barbecue wouldn’t lead to a successful career, I proudly showed him the sign for my restaurant, Silvio’s BBQ, and he couldn’t be more proud of my achievements his name is Silvio too.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey, I believe that three qualities that have been most impactful are my unwavering faith, passion for BBQ, and continuous pursuit of knowledge and improvement. My faith in God and belief that things will work out have been a guiding force, providing me with the resilience and optimism needed to overcome challenges and pursue my goals.
Secondly, my passion for BBQ has been a driving force behind my success. It has fueled my creativity, commitment, and dedication to delivering exceptional experiences through food and hospitality. This passion has not only shaped my career but also connected me with people and communities in meaningful ways.
Lastly, the continuous pursuit of knowledge and improvement has been crucial in my journey. By staying curious, learning from experiences, and seeking out opportunities for growth, I have been able to adapt, innovate, and evolve over the years.
For those who are early in their journey, I would advise them to embrace their faith, whatever form it may take, as a source of strength and motivation. Cultivate a passion for something that truly excites and inspires you, as it will drive you forward even during challenging times. Finally, never stop learning and seeking opportunities to improve yourself, as personal growth is essential for long-term success and fulfillment.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents have always supported me and encouraged me, not only him but also my wife and my son, my family is my inspiration.
