Meet Amber Syer

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amber Syer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Amber, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

The core of my resilience came from many people in my family but mostly my mother. She’s a “no bs” kind of lady. Although, she showed so much compassion toward my siblings and I, she also taught us confidence and commitment. Life has not always been kind. We have endured a lot of hardships together and individually. Breaking down has never been an option. At least not on the outside. Adapt and pivot. No matter what. Resilience can be powerful, but at times it can turn you cold. This is something I’m still learning how to handle. To be warmer. More accepting of help and realizing I don’t have to do this alone. Resilience is a gift and a curse.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I opened Bad Cat to bring a sense of balance to my life. Skincare, brows and wellness my way. Not your average dark spa room. The vibes are eclectic and cozy. It’s a safe space for all. My focus in my studio is to make sure every client feels welcome, comfortable, receives results driven treatments and leaves feeling educated and empowered. This is my career but it’s also my passion project. I eat, sleep and breathe Bad Cat Beauty.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

1. Passion for continuing education. Stay hungry. Learn something new every day.
2. Punctuality! Be early! Be ready! Be prepared! In this business, every minute counts. Time is money.
3. Lean on others in the industry. You cannot do this alone! Network and stay up to date with what’s going on in your community.

The best thing I can tell you, especially if you’re new to this business, is find a mentor. My mentors have helped shape me into who I am today and I doubt I would have had the confidence or drive to continue on if it weren’t for them.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

My number one obstacle is and will always be myself. My inner saboteur is constantly speaking doubt into my ear. I’m not sure how to overcome it, to be honest. As a mom, I suppose I have to remind myself that I wouldn’t want my kids to let their fears rule them and that I need to be a good example. Resilience, right? That’s really the only thing that keeps me going. That and my loyal clients that have continued to follow me through this journey and show me so much love.
