Meet Nicole Smith

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicole Smith a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Nicole, so happy to have you on the platform with us today and excited to chat about your lessons and insights. Our ability to make good decisions can massively impact our lives, careers and relationships and so it would be very helpful to hear about how you built your decision-making skills.

Making decisions can be challenging, but I approach them with care and consideration. I seek input from my colleagues and draw on their valuable experiences to help guide my choices. In my line of work, I am driven by my compassion for children and families and my passion for my career. My ultimate goal is to serve my clients to the best of my ability, and I am committed to supporting them whenever possible and dedicated to meeting their needs.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I have been a Family Childcare Provider for ten years, following in my mother’s footsteps and the field for over 20 years.
“My Child Care” offers a safe, nurturing environment for children aged 1-4. I am a certified teacher with an A.A. degree in Early Child Care Development and a CDA credential candidate (Council for Professional Recognition).

We are currently accepting enrollments for children aged 1-4 years old, and we look forward to welcoming new smiling faces into our program. Please visit my website for more details.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

As you embark on your journey, I want to share three essential qualities that have had a significant impact on my own path and that I believe would greatly benefit someone just starting out. These qualities are communication, creativity, and confidence. It’s important to always communicate honestly, to adeptly tailor your message to your audience, and to genuinely listen to the perspectives of others. Additionally, think of imaginative ways to connect with your customers, bring fresh ideas to your business, and maintain an interesting and engaging approach. Lastly, don’t hesitate to show self-confidence as you navigate your journey. This means believing in your abilities and having the assurance that you can effectively accomplish your tasks.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

Running your own business, whether with staff or alone, can sometimes be overwhelming. There are nights when I stay up late working on newsletter lesson plans, attending webinars to earn additional certificates, and brainstorming creative ads to promote my daycare. Once, I pushed myself too hard and didn’t get enough sleep, neglecting my well-being.

I had to find a better solution. Here are the strategies I started implementing: I give myself breaks, set time limits for work related to the business, delegating work, and make time for the gym. I realized that I am more effective for my business when prioritizing my health and well-being. I take daily walks in the park or around my neighborhood. I dedicate my weekends to resting, road trips and exploring different places, such as the beach during the summer, travel, vacation time, and time with family, and I make sure to take a break before starting any work during the weekend. Putting myself first has become a priority.
