Meet Karmelina Moore

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Karmelina Moore. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Karmelina , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

My life purpose was found by an accident. I always liked to tell stories and always liked the big (and small) screen, but I just figured that I was like many other kids who dreamed of achieving something bigger. It was not until I was around sixteen or seventeen, when I realized I was basically the only person who thought the way I did. It started with music taste. I was really into heavy metal in those days. I’m not talking screamo or dark industrial junk, I’m talking Motley Crue, Dokken, Ratt, and all of the great Sunset Strip bands. Obviously, my taste differed from most seventeen-year-olds in 2014, but I thought that they didn’t like it because they weren’t exposed to it. So I literally put together organized lists of; albums, songs, and bands for people to listen to and handed them out (when asked for of course!). It came to me as a surprise that nobody bothered, even though they requested my ‘supposed’ expertise. That is when I realized that people care more about an image than living a certain lifestyle.

With social media, it is easy to look “cool” or “nostalgic”, but not many of those influencers who flourish in nostalgia live the lifestyle. They put on spurs but they’re not riding a horse, you know? I realized that my purpose was not to convince people to like something, but to celebrate what I like, and that is what I have been doing ever since.

“Black Gold” is a project I am working on. It is set to be a 1980s musical drama based off of the novel of the same name by Clancy Nacht and Thursday Euclid. The project is an LGBTQIA+ romace laced with excess, twists, and catchy melodies.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am a screenwriter and what excites me most about creating stories for the screen is developing characters and creating worlds. Your story is your story, even if someone is paying you to write a script for them. As a writer, you are catapulting yourself into a fictional world that feels just as real as the one outside when you’re typing out actions and dialogue.

In “Black Gold” I’m traveling back to 1980s LA in a sense, and that is a rewarding and exciting experience for me. Reading and writing is like time travel and that’s what makes it a powerful tool. I am looking to shoot the sizzle reel at the end of the summer and am looking forward to the next steps for the project.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The three qualities that were most impactful on my journey to creative expression are; resilience, solitude, and ambition. Resiliency is a given. In any pursuit of success, you are going to get knocked down many times, but you just have to get back up, even if your legs are cut up and bruised. When I say solitude, I don’t mean physical isolation, although sometimes that can help. I mean the sense of being alone with your thoughts and being comfortable with being the only person in the room that has a certain opinion or outlook. Ambition is also obvious, you have to drive yourself because no one else will. Don Henley said it best, “People love it when you lose.”

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

When I feel overwhelmed I go to Dogtown and hop on my board. Skateboarding is a lot like writing or any other art form, because it is an expression that comes from deep within. Something about cruising along the Pacific and looking to the former site of the Pavilion, calms you and works out the anger or anxiety you have rising up inside. It’s therapeutic. Even watching skate videos calms me down; some personal favorites of mine are “Skateboard Kings”, which is kind of a documentary, but there’s a lot of skating in it, and “Santa Cruz: Wheels of Fire”.

Find something that makes you feel at ease, even if it’s not aligned with meditation or breath exercises.
