We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ann Schreiber. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ann below.
Ann, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Where do I get my resilience? This is an interesting question, as I have often written about resilience, more specifically, perseverance, in recent years. And these two traits are so related.
Of course, resilience is all about how we adapt to challenging situations—a job loss, the loss of a parent, divorce, etc. And then perseverance is all about keeping at it despite those setbacks.
I think I’ve always been a relatively resilient person, even before I faced significant adversity in my life. I guess I never thought of approaching life otherwise. Throughout my childhood, I learned a lot from my dad, a small business owner. He just kept “pressing on,” as he would say it, even when market conditions changed and consumer demands started to evolve.
I was also inspired by my mom, who decided to return to college when she was 40 to acquire her nursing degree. While I didn’t see it then, I later realized how much effort it took her and how much adversity she likely experienced trying to raise two kids while going to college.
So, for me, resilience was about challenging the status quo. It was and still is all about pursuing the best me I can be, no matter what gets in my way. That’s resilience.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I have always enjoyed writing. In March 2023, I officially launched my business, Copywriting For You, after pursuing writing (blogging and copywriting) as a side hustle since 2019.
So, what does my business do? My company description probably best sums it up. Copywriting For You (https://copywritingforyou.net/) specializes in helping companies boost their website traffic through captivating blogs, informative articles, and persuasive landing page copy. With my expertise, businesses can effectively engage their target audience and drive meaningful conversions. Additionally, I provide valuable assistance to job seekers by crafting compelling resumes, impactful cover letters, and optimized LinkedIn profiles, equipping them with the essential tools to stand out in today’s competitive job market. Whether you’re a company seeking increased online visibility or an individual aiming to make a strong impression in your job search, I am dedicated to delivering high-quality content that drives results and opens doors to new opportunities.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I have to go back to the question you asked earlier about resilience. Resilience and perseverance are two of my biggest qualities, especially in recent years. These skills have taught me how to pick up the pieces when things go wrong, how to learn from my mistakes and setbacks, and how to come out better on the other side.
I also have a very strong work ethic. However, I’ve been fortunate in my career to be able to do things that I love. Now, I get to write each and every day, helping other businesses grow their brand awareness and educate their customers and prospective customers. I love it so much, and it doesn’t feel like work.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
I wrote my first official book in early 2024, just published in June. I had always dreamed about doing this—it’s just that what I ultimately wrote about wasn’t the official “plan.” My book is titled “Perseverance. Reinvention.” It is all about resiliency and perseverance and picking yourself up to become a better version of yourself despite the challenges you may have faced. In my case, it was about starting over after an unexpected divorce.
Writing this book was a tremendous growth and learning opportunity for me. I have typically been a “short-form” writer, and long-form pieces are rarely over 2,500 words. My book is over 30,000 words and on a very personal topic. While it was cathartic to tell my story, I also took a risk in making the book a bit of a reflection journal. I want others to know that they can persevere no matter how tough things are. They can come out better on the other side. And I am hopeful that my words will help.
If my book helps just one person, it will have been worth the effort.
