We were lucky to catch up with Sandy Joy Weston recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sandy Joy , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I was 9 years old when I first started visiting my Mom in the Mental Institutions. Like it wasn’t difficult enough growing up in the projects but Ma spent quite a bit of her life in asylums. During those visits I knew I had to do something drastic to change the mood. I would wait till everyone was gathering in the lobby to get their medicine and I go up and tell them – You don’t need that medicine, just watch me I will bring you Joy. Then I would throw on my tap shows and push the button on my boom box that I brought and dance away. They were laughing and smiling, having a good old time. In that moment they had hope… I had hope. Now looking back I realize some of them really did need their medicine, but not everyone. Some were just poor, misunderstood or both. But if I could bring Joy to just one, if would be worth it. I knew from that day forward my mission would be to spread Joy
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I have been an entrepreneur my entire life, owning and operating Health & Wellness Centers called Weston Fitness in the Philadelphia area. In 2019 I sold my business and my side gig became my main gig. SJWproductions was born. SJWproductions mission is to spread Joy. I do that through my KeyNote speaking engagements, podcasts, workshops, books and Journals as well as coaching. My big idea worth spreading is … Life doesn’t happen to You … You happen to Life.
You get decide every single day how you are going to show up in the World. I teach techniques that only take 1-3 minutes a day to get into a Positive Powerful mindset using Movement Words & Laughter. I didn’t realize it till recently but my entire life I have been using Movement Words & Laughter to achieve my dreams. Growing up in the projects with a Mom that battled severe mental health issues I was surrounded by a lot of Nay Sayers.. Even those that meant well did not want me to get my hopes up to high. I should be grateful to graduate High School and get married. Nothing wrong with that but I had bigger plans and MWL was going to help me get there. Now I had no idea at the time how it would have such a huge impact in my life and the life of others. I just knew it made me feel better and I could tap into it whenever I wanted. You should check out my recent TedX on this. You will really enjoy it. I believe my life has been extremely blessed and anything I can do to spread a bit more Joy to others I am all in.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. The ability to tune out others and believe in myself no matter what.
Advice – Even well meaning people can only give you advice from their perspective, their journey. They come with their own set of fears and insecurities. You have your own Journey. Be very selective who you share your Dreams with until you are totally ready.
2. Trying new things and being ok with not being great at it.
Advice – take risks, put yourself out there. Make mistakes, wrong turns, It is part of living a full life. No one is perfect and that would be so boring if we were. Laugh at yourself more. Trust me people like vulnerability.. It makes you relatable.
3. The ability to be childlike and have fun.
Advice – play more, be silly, don’t make a big hairy deal out of things. Do something every day that makes you laugh
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
My number one challenge right now is getting on the bigger stages consistently with my New KeyNote speech.
I love speaking on stage. It doesn’t matter the size of the crowd, when I hop up on that stage I feel at home. I have been fortunate enough to speak all over the World and have met so many fascinating people. Recently I took a year long speaking course to up my game and get me in more doors. Although I have been on some awesome stages I am on a mission to get 12 big speaking engagements a year. When I owned and operated Health & Wellness Centers I was always meeting people who invited me to speak now it will involve more outreach and my belief it can happen. Yes that is right. In order for me to get the higher paying speaking engagements on those bigger stages or with bigger companies I must believe I am worth it and my vibration needs to be spinning on those plates.
