Meet Zel Monstrous

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Zel Monstrous . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Zel, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

If I’m being honest I really feel like my purpose somehow found me… it was always present in my life before I even had the chance to realize it. I remember being annoyed any time my mother would blast her stereo system. She would sing her heart out while I would huff & puff. I think her love for music definitely spiraled down to me as time went on. I had no idea I was even capable of being musically gifted since no in my immediate family who was a poet, songwriter etc. It made me feel extremely special. Stepping into my purpose felt like a kid who just got the biggest allowance of his or her life haha. It’s a feeling I get any time I complete a song or body of work. That feeling confirmed my purpose in life.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I come from very humble beginnings, I’m the oldest of 10 siblings, my grandmother played a huge part in my upbringing since both of my parents were never consistently around. With the exception of my mom who at did a lot for me in my earlier years of life. Many of these downfalls & setbacks definitely motivated me to go a little harder each and every day. From small talent shows & pep rally’s, to performing in front of hundreds at one of my very first ever shows. Somehow I ended up in the military, a lifestyle that exposed my weaknesses and made me an even stronger individual. The military showed me how our biggest obstacles can be ourselves.

Currently I’m in the process of dropping an album. It’s a very vulnerable body of work I’ve been piecing together since 2023. This project will be a representation of the heart, & healing of old wounds. The title of it is “Please, Forgive Me”

My goals & hopes for the near future is to have a positive impact on the youth, especially black and brown communities. I want to lead with my heart and go places I was told would be impossible or too far fetched! I need to be the best I can be, even with all of my flaws!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

For me personally some of the best qualities that were impactful on my journey was having patience. Knowing everyone is on their own journey so there’s no need to rush. What’s meant for you will always be! Also I would say believing in something greater than yourself. For my personal journey that was God, and prayer. And lastly I think being still has allowed me to appreciate life more, especially in a world where everything and everyone are always on GO!

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

The biggest area of growth I’ve experienced recently has definitely been vulnerability, and taking accountability for my own actions whether good or bad. Also learning how to put my ego aside
