Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Eric Walters. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Eric, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I always used to struggle with finding my purpose. It took a long time before I even figured out what I wanted to do with my life. I heavily struggled with mental health in the 8th grade, partially due to the pandemic, which left me confused and constantly searching for a way out. During this time I turned to music which was an escape from all the darkness I found myself in, and that ultimately fuelled my love for hip-hop. I was really into artists such as Juice WRLD, $NOT, $uicideboy$, and other artists along those lines. The reason I loved these artists so much is because for the most part they all spoke out about their own struggles with mental health, whether that’s heartbreak, depression, anxiety, etc. That’s why I began to create music. I wanted to act as an outlet for anyone and everyone to use and find a little bit of peace, just as the way these artists did for me. It’s hard to find people to relate to when you’re in that state of mind, and if I could help even just ONE person recognize they aren’t alone, then I’d feel more than accomplished. That’s my purpose.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I like to call myself an artist, rather than a rapper or singer, because i’m more than that. I love to write music, in fact I have around 920 songs written at the time of this interview. Although my discography is primarily rap, I have and will continue to experiment with singing, as well as producing and mixing. I mix all of my own music and will occasionally create my own beats, but i’m still working on that aspect of music. Music is so special because it’s a universal language which anyone can speak. The way different instruments and elements of production work together to create pieces of art which any culture can cherish is beautiful. The beauty of music is unlike anything else, and I love that. Having the ability to speak and contribute to that language feels except special to me. I’ve met so many amazing people through music, such as everyone within my rap collective “Alternate Generation”. Shout out to JXYDEN KAGE, Yesse, UFO Nathan, JaxTheKidd, and everyone else who i’ve worked with in the past, love you all. To everyone who’s reading this, go show love to every single one of these guys, the work they put in is insane and i’m sure you’ll enjoy what they create.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Persistence. This goes for any job or dream you’re chasing, stay persistent throughout your journey. The ability to push through any obstacles fuelled by hate and jealousy is what ultimately got me to where I am today. Along the same lines would be dedication. Always stay dedicated to what you want to accomplish because with enough time you’ll be able to achieve almost anything. My dedication towards being the voice of those who are afraid to speak out about their own struggles is what drove me towards the path i’ve always dreamed of being on. It took a lot of patience, which is the final quality necessary for success. Patience is crucial for everything on this earth, whether that’s music or finding the love of your life. If you can manage to maintain patience throughout your life, you’ll find yourself in a very good spot. After every accomplishment of mine I strive for something even greater, so until i’m bigger than Kanye, i’ll be patiently waiting. For anyone looking to strive in the music business, just know it takes a LOTTT of time. No one blows up over night unless you have connections or you’re a millionaire. Keep filming tiktok’s and posting reels. Keep dropping song after song after song. Keep commenting on people’s posts for advertisement, it’s all worth it in the end.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
At the moment, I’m currently struggling with managing all of my activities outside of music with my music career. I am really into football and have been since I was in grade 2, so playing football 3 times a week paired with work takes up a lot of my personal life. The best way i’ve found to overcome this problem is to spend my off days coming up with as many songs, ideas,
or beats that I can, which I can then work on throughout the week without having to stress about not having time to record. I can work on one song at a time every night and if I need to i’ll dedicate another night to mixing and engineering.
