Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Desh Please. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Desh, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I think in a way we all face a bit of imposter syndrome. For me, I have a tendency to overthink or psych myself out over things so the best way I overcome this is just by doing. I could spend months perfecting something in my head to death but that puts so much pressure on executing the actual idea it often never gets done. If I spend too much time planning it out to make it perfect, I end up wasting hours spinning my wheels and getting nothing done instead, I’ve found the more I just try things, experiment, throw things at the wall to see what sticks, I get over my fears holding me back and realize things aren’t as scary as I make them out to be in my head. You hear it all the time but sometimes you really do just need to start. You can think of it as “one day” or “Day One”. You won’t get it right the first time, mistakes will be made, you’ll live, you’ll learn, but the more you put yourself out there and take risks, the more comfortable you’ll be trying new things. It does get easier… the more you practice your craft, the more you refine your skills, the more you put yourself out there, the more you TRY. Putting in the work and just DOING the thing is what gets you closer to where you want to be. It’s baby steps one day at a time. It’s progress. It’s part of the journey and figuring it out on the way by focusing on consistency and having discipline and setting deadlines for yourself is how you actually hold yourself accountable and stay on track to achieve your goals. Every overnight success is ten years in the making. Every day someone else is figuring it out. So can you. Especially as independent artists, we are all facing uphill battles everyday and new obstacles will emerge but if you stay focused and learn to “pivot”, sometimes a fresh mindset can change everything and keep you inspired.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m Desh, an independent music artist in Anaheim, California fueled by coffee and stupid boys. I play both guitar and piano and write in a variety of styles but my main genre I call Cry Pop. Songs you want to sing (and cry) along to with lyrics you care about. I write from personal experiences and past relationships. I find inspiration in places and people I share a deep connection with. I’m a gemini and often feel at war with myself and the two polar opposites of my personality. I am an introverted extrovert. Part of me is outgoing and silly. A girl who loves talking to people and isn’t afraid to make a fool of herself. She loves to laugh, she’s weird and not afraid to be her truest self. She is optimistic. She gets excited over the littlest things. She loves getting dressed up and loves to go out and be social. The other part of me is distant, doubtful and feels things too deeply. She wants to shut out the world, She overthinks, she worries and often lets her negative thoughts consume her. While finding my sound as an artist, I’ve realized Cry Pop isn’t just a genre but a lifestyle. It’s embracing all sides of your personality and being okay if your taste changes, if you change your style or your mind. It’s the “if you don’t accept me at my weird, you don’t deserve me at my normal” type of mindset. It’s letting your freak flag fly. It’s accepting yourself and learning to live with yourself on not just your best days but on your worst days as well. It’s cool to hear that so many people in my community relate to my lyrics and resonate with Cry Pop. I recently launched a rebrand of my merch website under the domain CryPop.com where I design all the products myself along with suggestions and requests from my audience. I also am super excited the very first song I wrote on piano, “Thumbtack” is out on Spotify, Apple Music and all platforms. I filmed and edited a self-directed music video for it on my YouTube: https://youtu.be/Yc9MPCIfbCU

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think YouTube is something I wish I would have utilized even sooner. Not only can you share your own content and reach an audience all over the world, it’s also a great tool for learning how to do something to further your skills and your craft. I’ve started filming and editing my own music videos, sharing behind the scenes footage and more but I wish I would have started sharing my original music sooner. That being said, it’s never too late. The sooner you start, the closer you are to finding your audience. I’ve used YouTube for so many tutorials for the various programs I use like Premier Pro, Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, CapCut and have even shared some tutorials I’ve made myself showing how to get your music on Spotify and all streaming platforms for other indie artists looking to release their music that aren’t sure where to start. I’ve also used YouTube for vocal warm ups and piano tutorials when I was learning how to play. The knowledge is out there and so much of it is free and easily accessible these days. Everyone should take advantage of the resources available and use them to expand their skillset.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Right now, I’m trying to work with as many producers as possible. I’ve worked with so many talented producers but while I’m still trying to find my unique sound, I’m searching for a producer I really click with musically and someone I can collaborate with in the production process. I’ve always had a very strong vision for the music I want to make and over the past couple years i’ve been learning how to use a DAW, Logic Pro so I can contribute and help communicate the sound I’m trying to achieve with each track. Some producers I’d love work with are Dan Nigro, Ryan Tedder, Glen Ballard, Aaron Dessner and Finneas.
