Meet Kristen Theisen

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kristen Theisen. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Kristen, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

I developed a strong work ethic partly from growing up in the midst of a family business – a greenhouse passed down from my grandfather to my dad. I began working during the summers when I was around 8 years old, selling vegetables and flowers. As I got older, weekends were spent at the greenhouse as well, so I’ve never known a time when I didn’t work. Even in school, however, I had an internal drive to work hard. I didn’t want to let my teachers down or disappoint my parents. Certain things didn’t come easy to me, like math or chemistry, so I worked extra hard to ensure I got good grades.

My work ethic has been a benefit in my career, fueling my ability to meet deadlines and successfully complete projects. On the flip side, I’ve had to overcome tendencies to take on too much responsibility and put unrealistic expectations on myself. I’m definitely grateful to have a strong work ethic though, as it’s given me the confidence to establish my own business.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

After many years leading strategic communications and marketing for corporations and nonprofit organizations, I founded Amplify Communications Consulting in 2023 to focus on my passion for amplifying voices and driving impact. My goal is to propel businesses and individuals to success by enhancing their communication effectiveness.

I started out on the frontlines of media pitching at a public relations firm before going to sales and marketing for a global family entertainment company, and eventually found a place promoting the missions of nonprofit organizations. Through my career journey, I built a trail of successful campaigns, millions in revenue, and a powerful professional network. After a transformational experience with the global communications model, Insights® Discovery, I decided to become a licensed practitioner. I now empower teams to build stronger relationships, bridge communication gaps, and turn clashes into collaboration. My customized workshops enhance leadership skills and strengthen relationships, igniting team effectiveness.

In the philanthropic realm, I’ve maintained the Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) designation for over 10 years, which signifies my commitment to the highest standards of ethics and performance. I am also a Certified Facilitator through the global Association of Fundraising Professionals, allowing me to effectively teach approved fundraising methods and best practices.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The qualities that have been most impactful to me throughout my career thus far are commitment, flexibility, and integrity. I believe that having a true commitment to doing your job to the best of your ability is a quality that will allow you to stand out and invite trust. It demonstrates to your company leaders and your co-workers that you can be relied upon when they need you, and that is invaluable.

Another quality that is so important is flexibility, which I’ve learned to embrace in my career. As a young professional, I was somewhat rigid in my expectations and approach to my work. Once in the real world, however, I realized that situations arise, and priorities change based on current needs. Having the ability to regroup, while ensuring the most important tasks are completed, is critical. Things rarely go as planned, so demonstrating the ability to adapt will serve you well.

The third quality that has impacted my journey is integrity. Staying true to myself and acting in a way that supports my values has enhanced the confidence I have in my work. I believe this quality also garners respect from co-workers, colleagues, and leaders. It can be challenging – especially starting out in your career – to ensure you aren’t swayed by others. I can recall a few times when I was influenced by a supervisor or company leader, to take an approach that didn’t feel right. Looking back, I wish I’d acted differently, but it helped me grow. I now know how to navigate situations that could undermine my beliefs and values, while remaining professional and true to myself.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

It may sound silly, but Who Moved My Cheese by Dr. Spencer Johnson, is a book that has so many valuable lessons. I truly feel that the ability to embrace change is something that will set you up for success. Someone once said the only constant is change, and it’s so true. You can either be paralyzed by fear of the unknown and stay stuck in your ways or reframe the change as an opportunity. It’s definitely not comfortable, but I try to stay rooted in the belief that the outcome of the change will be even better than before. This outlook builds resiliency, which allows you to move forward with optimism and positivity.
